Prepaid code is invalid for this country

So my friend (based in the USA) gifted me a 6 month premium subscription to Spotify. Unfortunately when I go to add this to my account it tells me that the prepaid code is invalid for my country (Belgium).

I tried changing my account details so it appeared I was based in the US, but to no avail.

Can this be fixed or can he get a refund?

Hi There!

Unfortunately, gift cards can only be used in the country in which they are purchased and in their same currency. The best bet is for your friend to use the code in the USA as gift codes do not have refunds available.

This makes no sense at all. If someone gives you an Amazon gift voucher you can use it outside of the USA, why is spotify different? I just got gifted premimum for 3 months and cannot use it because it was bought in America.
