I tried to cancel my subscription by removing the card on file, thinking that it would stop the recurring charges, but I found that I was still charged for the subscription.

Welcome to the Spotify Community!

 

Sounds like you just removed the card from the Saved payment cards section on your account page. This option allows you to easily manage your payment details for one-time purchases; it has no effect on your subscription. You'll find more info on how to cancel your plan in this article.
