Same username different passwords for 2 different accounts

I have somehow managed to create two different accounts. Both have the same username (not an email address), but the accounts are accessed using different passwords. I find it really strange that this is possible. One of the accounts is a premium account and thw other is not. When i forget my pwd for the premium subscription and i start the reset pwd process and enter my username i am always sent a reset link to the account that is not the premium account. i have luckily been able to get both pwds (found in a notebook), but my question now is am i able to delete the non premium account  without destroying the premium account??? Anyone experienced anything similar and able to advise?
