Trying to leave iTunes for Spotify

Ive been a loyal itunes user for years. but I have had enough of them and want to leave. 

Spotify is what everyone has told me is the best alternative. But I have a lot fo music on itunes. I would like to import this music from itunes to spotify. I have seen threads saying this is possible. But trying to follow through, nothing happens. My playlists from itunes do come through, but I want the whole library. is it possible? If so how? Btw Im on the free version at the moment but will swtich to premium if I can do this.
