US friend cant redeem ecard code in Portugal

I bought a friend, who is from the US, an ecard but they're living in Portugal right now. They aren't able to redeem it and they can't change their country settings. Is there a way around this? And if not is it true that ecards can last for a year before they can be redeemed?

To prevent people buying eCards abroad where it is cheaper, Spotify Premium codes are only valid to redeem on accounts which are registered in the same country as where they where purchased. If they ask the Spotify team very nicely via the online contact form they might swap the code for them though.

It is true, eCard (and gift cards) are valid for 12 months from the data of purchase/activation.
