Un-link from Facebook, resubscribe via email?

So, I decided recently that I wanted to un-link my account from Facebook, and log in using my email address.

According to a post on the community, it looks like this isn't possible - you actually need to de-activate your account and re-subscribe with a new user name. This seemed like a bit of a pain but I tried it anyway.

BUT, once I deleted my account, I found that my email address was "already taken" when trying to set up a new login (presumably by Facebook account - my Facebook acct is linked to my primary email acct). So now I had to re-login via Facebook to post to the community, to see if there's a way to actually re-set an account - or an email address - to finally un-link from Facebook.

Any suggestions? I figured I wasn't the first person with this problem but I didn't see any answers on the forums on the 2nd part of my issue.
