I was registering for the student discount subscription, and on the page where I "say a bit about myself", I filled out my name and college, but when I hit "continue", the page said something went wrong and to either try again later or contact the support "team".
I tried again, reentered my card info and everything and received the same message. I went back to try a third time but my card was denied. I then realized, after checking my mobile banking app, that not only was I unable to upgrade my account, my card was charged $5.33, twice.

It's very likely just a pending charge if you haven't received a receipt from Spotify via Email: https://support.spotify.com/account_payment_help/managing_payments/pending-charges/
Have you tried manually verifying yourself on https://spotify.sheerid.com yet?
