As long as you paid for your previous plan directly to Spotify, the payment will be transferred when you upgrade to Family and your next billing date will be brought forward (to make up for the price difference of the two plans).
If, however, you already subscribed to Premium through another company (e.g. mobile/internet provider or iTunes), you first need to cancel the subscription with them and wait for the account to revert to free.
