What do I do with the SMS code?

Trying to login using the linux client.  When I put in my username and password, a notification pops up in a red box, "you will get an sms shortly with a code to use for logging in".  The boxes to enter a username and password remain unchaged. 

The SMS reaches my phone with the message, "Use [code] as your password for Spotify".  I delete the password from the password box in the client and enter the code.  Then I press login in the client again.  This time the notification changes to let me know that my "username or password is incorrect."  What am I doing wrong?  There's no separate box in the client for entering the code.
