i cant change my username i see so many people with real usernames but HOW

So the guide says that you can change your display name but not the username. However the name people will see is the display name I assume.
Here's the bit I copied and pasted (hope thats not illegal):
For: Mobile and tablet
Tap Home , then Settings .
Tap View profile.
Tap EDIT PROFILE.
Tap your display name to change it.
Tip: You can also add or change your profile photo here.
Tap Save.
