Android Widget won't play music

On my oneplus 5, the widget won't start any music.

steps to replicate:

1. Open app

2. play some music

3. clear running apps

4. on widget, click play 

Would be nice to not have to open app to play music when the widget is right there.

Hi. I just added the widget to test and it seems to work fine on my S8. Spotify wasn't open when I added the widget and it still played the last track when I hit the play button.

Is it possible some power saving mode or app is shutting down the spotify process which usually runs in the background even when the app is closed?
