Automatically switches device but only when I'm listening podcast

Automatically switches device but only when I'm listening podcast

I have spotify on my work laptop which I listen to music while working.
If I leave spotify on (in laptop) and then go to my car and start listening to Joe Rogan podcast from mobile phone, Spotify constantly switches to the laptop device and stops playing it. I can keep manually switching to mobile phone device, but it will after a few seconds or minutes stop and switch to laptop again.
Strange thing is that if I play music in my mobile it doesn't switch back to laptop. I'm really losing my patience with Spotify as the only solution is to remember to turn off Spotify on my laptop before going to the car...

Hey folks,

Thanks for posting here and welcome!

We really appreciate all the info you kindly sent us. In this case, if you're experiencing this behavior, we'll need the following details:

  • Make/model and exact OS of the affected devices.
  • Exact Spotify version you are running on the affected devices.
  • Troubleshooting you've tried so far.
  • A video recording of this behavior.

You can attach the videos in your next reply in mp4 format, or you can also upload them to YouTube or Google drive and make them public, so we can visualize them.

If you already sent us some of this info, no worries, you just need to send us the remaining details, so we can forward all of it to our tech team.

Keep us in the loop!

Edit: We appreciate all the sent details so far! Thank you, folks!
The issue is on our radar but we can't provide you with an exact timeframe in which it will get addressed.
In order to stay on top of all fixes, keep your app up to date at all times 🙂 Cheers!

When I go from my work computer to my home computer, and I press Play on Spotify, I want it to play on my home computer--instead it starts playing on my work computer. The same thing happens when I switch from my phone to my computer. I always want spotify to default to playing on whatever device is locally providing commands, but it seems to try to be too clever. How do I default it to local control behavior?

Ridiculous that this is still an issue. Here's how I solved it. Only use the app on your phone. If you're at work or home, listening on an actual computer then only listen through their website. I've uninstalled all the apps off of my desktops and laptops, and I no longer have this problem. There's something about the apps that makes it switch from one to the other.

How is this still not fixed?  How is there not even a work around? This is insane. I think it may be a bug in the windows client.  What progress has been made with this issue?  Should I simply cancel and go to tidal or something?

still not fixed in 2025..

Not fixed. For me it switches to my PC when listening to one podcast that has a video attached to it, even if i press the "only sound"-button. Listening to podcasts that doesn't have video seems to be fine however, so it might be a video related issue.

Glad I came across this thread. I am experiencing something similar, although my situation is between two phones. I have an iPhone (work phone) and a Pixel Phone. I pair my iPhone with a small Bluetooth speaker in the bedroom to play brown noise from a Spotify podcast. Sometimes, if my partner is still asleep, I connect my Bluetooth earbuds to my Pixel to watch YouTube videos. The instant my headphones pair to the Pixel, the Spotify app opens on my Pixel and starts to play the brown noise podcast episode through there, which invariably wakes my partner. I have followed the suggestions here - uninstalling and reinstalling, clearing the cache, etc. none of this has worked. Both devices are in bedtime mode when this happens and I wonder if there is a weird interaction when devices are in bedtime mode. It's a shame really, because I thought I had found a good sleep noise solution, but this is unworkable.
