Downloaded songs "disappear" after memory card is disconnected temporarily

I have configured Spotify to use my SD card for storage, and usually download my favourite playlists for offline listening. I have only 16GB of phone internal memory which isn't enough for my playlist downloads. However, if the SD card isn't available even temporarily, once reconnected the playlists appear to be not downloaded. This is very annoying as I have to re-download all playlists again once this happens! Any idea why this happens, and how to prevent this from happening again?

It's by design and there's nothing you can do until they come up with a better way of handling this situation.

Thanks for your response. Spotify not handling this seems very naive to me.
I mean, you have all the downloaded songs in the SD card. Can't the app
just fix the references to point to these file locations?
