Installing while avoiding Google Play

Hi, I recently got an Android phone and would like to install it while avoiding Google Play, as I already have an account tied to a non-Gmail address and I'd like to keeep it that way. It doesn't seem to allow signing in through the GP app store without a Gmail address.

Unfortunately, trying to download it directly pulls up a litany of scare warnings regarding privacy and device access. Is there a straightforwward way through this or is it a choice between two bad options? Thanks.

Just a note if downloading the apk from Spotify servers. You may have to go to settings on your phone and then in security check the box to allow installation from unknown sources. This is a safety precaution to ensure that anything not installed from Google Play is signed and has passed Googles security measures.

Downloading files form a trusted source (such as Spotify server) should mean that this app is fine and OK to install. FYI - I can verify this apk is the latest version and is signed correctly, so you're safe to install it.
