I bought my Samsung S7 in June 2017 and perhaps the Settings menu has been updated, because some of the settings quoted in earlier posted have different names in my menu. This is the solution that worked for me with EXACT names:
Settings>Lock screen and security>Notification on lock screen>Under "Show Notification From" select to enable Spotify
settings-lock screen and security-information and face widgets-face widgets: turn off or on music controller. DONE 🐵

There is a bug in the system on some phones.
If you go settings - notifications - Spotify.
You might notice nothing written under "on lock screen" even when you click on and select "show content" from the pop up selections. And of course Spotify controls won't show in the locked screen.
In order to set the notification to "show content" under "on lock screen".
You have to first select "hide content" then change it to "show content".
You will notice this time it will actually write your selection under the "on lock screen" setting.
