My Question or Issue
I'm a simple girl. I like to open Spotify, pick a speaker group, and listen to podcasts while I do chores. Unfortunately, for many weeks (months?) now, Spotify has decided that's too much to ask.
The fun begins when I move to select a speaker group. Will my speakers and speaker groups even appear in the list of devices? Place your bets! On a good day - which are few and far between - they will, which means I am ready for the next obstacle: Will Spotify connect to the device? If I'm having a great day - even rarer - it will, and in under a minute. Incredible! We're home free, right? Wrong! Every time my phone wakes to display something (typically a ringing alarm), Spotify disconnects from the speaker or speaker group and plays through my phone speakers, which means I am booted back to step one.
Don't even get me started on using voice commands to try to do any of this. I don't know whether this is on Google or Spotify, but for roughly the same period of time, I have had no luck convincing Spotify to play anything of mine on a speaker group by asking out loud. EVERY request that includes a speaker group nets me a "please enable personal results on this device" from my Google Home speakers. I've had personal results enabled for years, and toggling the setting changes nothing. Hard rebooting a Home device might fix the issue for the next one or two requests - possibly pointing to Google rather than Spotify - but it's weird that both issues seem to revolve around speaker groups.

Some more (potentially related) issues, for SEO:
By resetting the network settings, we meant the network settings on your phone, not a full router reset, so you wouldn't lose any custom configurations like port forwarding. This can be done from Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings.
I'd have to reconnect all my Bluetooth devices and redo all my saved Wi-Fi connections after doing this, correct? That will be extremely painful, so this is also a low priority troubleshooting step for me, if so.
Since you mainly listen to downloaded podcasts, the audio quality settings might not have a big impact. However, if some of your podcasts are streamed or partially cached, lowering the quality temporarily might help us see if the issue is related to audio or connection handling.
I almost exclusively listen to downloaded podcasts. It accounts for over 90% of my podcast listening experience, and every time I can recall running into this issue, it's been while trying to play podcasts from one of my two main downloaded playlists.
Also, you mentioned using a Pi-hole, it could be worth checking whether it's blocking any Spotify or Google Cast domains. You can try disabling it briefly to see if your full device list appears again. Keep us posted on how it goes.
I'll try to remember to do this the next time the issue occurs.
If the pi-hole were blocking these domains on my local network, though, why would I ever be able to cast to my speaker groups while pi-hole was active?
I am encountering the same issue. I can add that it is definitely a Spotify issue, and not a Google or device issue, as I have no issues casting to the same speaker group from Apple Music, YouTube Music, Soundcloud, and Tidal on the same device. Exact same results on both my phone, my wife's phone and my tablet so it's not a device issue.
If it helps, the devices are a Pixel Tablet, a Pixel 8 Pro and a Pixel 9 Pro Fold. All running the latest Spotify build (9.0.94.274)

I didn't even think to test YouTube Music, dang. I'll try to remember to double check that the next time I have this issue.

Does that include the new information I added to my original post, by chance?
I encounter the same problems with Spotify and Google Home Speaker Groups.
The behavior is also very inconsistent.
E.g. TuneIn works well.
Google Pixel 8, Android 16 (and before).
It's like the mobile app just can't get or stay connected when Chromecasting. So it could still be Google's fault - no telling how stable that API is - but since other, non-Google apps don't seem to have these issues, I'm still leaning towards the ball being in Spotify's court.
Exact same issue here. I've tried all the fixes suggested with no luck. Thanks me-is-me for all the suggestions and pushing it on.
Any ETA on a fix Spotify?
Happy to help! I'm still experiencing the issue, it's driving me bonkers.
I also have the same issue. Everything was working fine on YoutubeMusic until my subcription expired and switched to spotify but now i cannot cast to group speakers. I can only cadt on single speakers. Kinda annoying
If it makes you feel any better, it's not your fault. This has been an issue for a while. I'm still dealing with it.
Yeah now im thinking of either go back to youtube music or find other speakers that can do the same besides google speakers.
To add info my group consist of
1 Google display v2
1 Nest Audio
1 Nest home mini
I read (and later confirmed for myself) that one workaround is to cast to a single speaker, then open the Google Home app and switch the cast to a speaker group from there. It sucks, but it's slightly better than nothing.
Edit: Also, make sure to like and/or mark "Me Too" on the original post, if you can. Should help us get Spotify's attention on the issue.
I have the exact same issues with Google Cast Speaker Groups -- Whether using the window native app or my phone app or via voice. It is what others have stated : a) connect to single cast is ok b) connect to group, takes forever or even gives up, totally not usable.
Using the exact same cast group with Youtube music is like night and day -- instant once you hit play.
Hard to believe in 2025 with AI on the rise, simple things like starting music streams still doesn't work reliably 🙂
Not that Spotify needs defending, but it is hard to get two different technologies from two different companies to communicate, especially when one of the companies is Google. But I refuse to believe Spotify doesn't have the resources to make it happen.
Don't forget to leave a like and/or a "Me Too" on my original post to get eyes on it!
Just wondering did you guy opted for Gemini home? Maybe that plays a role? Mine is using gemini now
No, I haven't opted in to Gemini Home.
Hello, I have the same issue; however, I ran some tests and can provide more precision. The problem is only on the Spotify Android app (tested on Samsung Galaxy S25, S22, S25 FE with Android 16, and Samsung Galaxy A51 with Android 13), not on iPhone (works on iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 26) or Desktop (works on Linux app v1.2.63.394.g126b0d89 and 1.2.74.477.g3be53afe; the web app doesn't have Google Cast). I can connect to my speaker group only the first time after I connect to my Wi-Fi. That is, to cast Spotify to the speaker group, I have several solutions:
- Reconnect to my Wi-Fi (but it does not work every time). I tested using a fixed MAC address (by default, the smartphone assigns a random MAC address at each connection): this workaround does not works with a fixed MAC address.
- Cast from another device (ex, Desktop app)
- Use the aforementioned trick: to cast on a speaker first (not on Google TV Streamer, it seems that it needs to be a speaker) and change to the group in the Google Home app.
I tested 2 speaker groups in 2 different homes:
1) Google Home mini, Google TV Streamer 4K, Google Chromecast Ultra, Google Nest Hub
2) Google Home mini, Google TV Streamer 4K.
The issue occurs in both homes.
Apple Music and YouTube Music (both on Android) work well with the speaker group, so I'm primarily using them for now.
In conclusion, it appears to be a bug in the current version of the Spotify Android app. I hope that a fix will be released soon.
Excellent work! I'm glad for evidence that Spotify can fix this, if they just spend the time. And maybe they can fix the terrible new UX for adding things to playlists while they're at it.
Did they fix? I had 3 successful cast on to all of my speakers lately. Im using galaxy s25 ultra running spotify 9.1.6.1145
