Why can't I play Local Files?




Local Files are music files stored on your computer that can be played through the Spotify app. They’re put into the Spotify app by selecting Sources for Local Files from within the app’s Settings menu.


If they’re not playing on your desktop, there’s a number of things you can try to change that:


Note: Files or downloads from illegal sources are not permitted. If your files are from an illegal source, this may be why it isn’t working.


Spotify supports .mp3.mp4, and .m4p files. It doesn’t support .mp4 files that contain video, or the iTunes lossless format (M4A), but we’ll do our best to match any unsupported local files with songs from the Spotify catalog.


Some of your tracks may be protected in restricted formats. You can install QuickTime on your desktop to allow most of these tracks to be played on Spotify.


For a more in-depth guide to get Local Files working, check this out:


  • Go to the left-hand bar > click ‘Local Files’ > delete all tracks.
  • Go to Settings > Local Files > toggle on all sources > add any sources that you may need. (A quick way to navigate to this menu is by clicking Spotify > Preferences in the top bar.)
  • Update or install the latest version of QuickTime from here.
  • Update your codec pack.


Note: downloading software to update codecs could solve the root of this issue if your files are currently FLAC.
