Thee Problem with Spotify Royalties

Hello, Spotify users.

My name is Michael. I am a premium subscriber who uses Spotify devotely. I love how I can play it anywhere I go on practically any device I frequently use.  However, I'm posting this today in hopes I reach a few of you who glance over this. Artists need money. Spotify and many other streaming services do not pay the artists enough. Yes, there is a ton of exposure. However, exposure does not directly pay the bills these artists have. While they love to create and perform, they also are doing what they do for a living.

I have made a video featuring accounts from both musicans and educated individuals about the royalty imbalances that Spotify imposes on artists, along with real numbers and a potential solution to the issue at hand. I wish it wasn't an issue at all, but it unfortunately is. If you have several minutes, please take the time to view my audio essay on the Problem with Spotify Royalties.

***** I just want to say that Spotify is not the main enemy. It's the developing market of streaming. It's still a very new system and the kinks need to be worked out. The lack of payment artists receive for their work is just one of the many kinks in the system and one I chose to focus on *****

The industry at large has always been spectacular at pulling money away from us (music artists). Nature of the beast, as they say. This is why some of us just bust our rear ends and grind, and play as many shows as possible, and sell as much merch as possible at those shows. Personally I've always made the majority of my money touring and selling merch. People buying tracks and records is just a super small sliver of the pie (in my humble opinion - I've been in the industry long just enough to have seen the evolution of the industry from hard media to streamable and downloadable media and this is an opinion based solely on my personal experience - everyone elses mileage may vary, of course). I do agree however that as the industry further evolves, the issue with the problems presented by royalties for streamable media will disappear. With all of that said, I have not watched your video yet but certainly intend to as you have piqued my interest for sure. 🙂

Here is an interesting article about this topic, well worth reading. It leaves me wondering where Spotify stands at the moment.
