Funkadelic is a good choice in your playlist. They were into what was called "Psychedelic Soul".

Psychedelic Soul is mixing the characteristics of soul with psychedelic rock. It came to prominence in the late 1960s and continued into the 1970s, playing a major role in the development of funk music and disco. 

This playlist Psychedelic Soul, done some years ago, will give you great examples of the genre.
