[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

Spotify you are a bunch of thieves and you can stick your premium up yourselves. Im sick and tired of being told by your support and the remedials you call moderators that the ads are part of the same audio stream. THEY ARE NOT. They stop the podcast. They bring up new metadata. They are not part of the podcast audio. Youre allowing them. Youre serving me ads from your servers. That is just so wrong when we are paying for NO ADS with a premium subscription. Ive been a user since about 2009 but im just going to start listening on youtube. At least adblockers work there. At least they arent gaslighting their own customers.

I totally agree with everybody on here. There should be no ads during podcasts. This could be a deal-breaker.

You are actively inserting 30s ads to podcast streams - don't blame the creators. I pay for premium to NOT HAVE ADS. Fix this!

STOP THE ADS for premium users!

I have been a paying customer for close to 10 years and if the ads continue, you can count me out!

Seriously considering unsubscribing. The injected ads by Spotify are horrific, I listen to podcasts to get to sleep and at the middle and end of the podcast I get a stupid loud ad that wakes me up.

Premium should be no ads. If you need to charge more to ensure the content creators don't go out off pocket then reconsider the price of premium or make an add-on for ad free podcasts.

I agree with the majority. The Spotify dev team CANNOT be run by more than like 3 people. The UI/UX is terrible on all levels. Nothing is intuitive. It's buggy. Have you ever been to the settings and accounts pages? Yikes. All you can do is call support ( if you can get ahold of them ). When you download one podcast it stays there for eternity until you clear it from cache. EVERY OTHER PODCAST PLATFORM ON THE INTERNET CACHES THE FEW MOST RECENT PODCASTS FOR OFFLINE LISTENING AT ANY TIME AND THEN REMOVES THEM AUTOMATICALLY ONCE EITHER LISTENED TO OR A NEW EPISODE PUSHES IT OFF THE QUEUE. Why do I have to remember manually press a button to cache a podcast before I travel by plane or over mountain passes? Why can't we watch podcasts on ps4/5? Why are you the way that you are? So does it surprise me that Spotify can put together that premium should mean premium and not run ads? No, it does not. wE dOnT hAvE cOnTrOl oVeR pOdCaSt CrEaToRs RuNiNg AdS. lol It's literally YOUR platform. But jokes on me. I spent 15 minutes of my life writing this post that no one of influence will read. Elon Musk, are you there?

This is ridiculous. You are breaching the contract Spotify. I don't want to hear any ads. Just pay podcasters more.

THE ISSUE - SPOTIFY-INSERTED ADS
(I'm cross posting this from  https://community.spotify.com/t5/Other-Podcasts-Partners-etc/Ads-on-joe-rogan-with-premium-account/m...

Okay, I'm a bit of a Johnny-Come-Lately to both this topic and the Joe Rogan podcast, but it's disheartening to see so many people complaining about the same, very simple issue and seeing the response from Spotify being either clueless or dishonest.

To be precise - the issue for most paying Spotify customers here is not the advertising inserted into the audio file of a podcast by the podcaster as either produced audio or a simple ad read - that's a decision made by the podcaster long before they upload their finished podcast to the Spotify servers. I get it, that's largely beyond Spotify's control at the moment.

(Though let's not kid ourselves, if Spotify were properly motivated and more user-focused, I bet they could do something about blocking even those ads too, with appropriate compensation to the podcasters)

No, the issue being complained about here are the "dynamic ad slots" being offered by Spotify to podcasters. These are ads being (randomly?) inserted by the Spotify service into the middle of the Joe Rogan podcasts, often in the middle of sentences. These are ads that play back in their own little timeline, so clearly the Spotify system handles them as separate little pieces of audio, and is inserting them on-the-fly during a podcast playback.

THE SPOTIFY RESPONSE SO FAR
So far the Spotify response to this has either been clueless (misunderstanding the type of ads being complained about) or dishonest (implying that Spotify has no control over all forms of advertising on their service - if the podcaster chooses to enable them).

If you're a Spotify employee reading this - No, it doesn't matter if it was the podcaster's choice about whether to enable such "dynamic" inserted advertising. Premium users should not be hearing these ads, and their playback is entirely within Spotify's control. Take this quote from Spotify in this thread:

"Spotify gives the podcast hosts the option to choose if they would like to have a dynamic ad slot in their podcast, but that isn't something Spotify can control - it's up to the individual podcast owners if they choose to have that type of ad in their content."

Amazing - in a single sentence Spotify admits to setting up and offering the dynamic ad slot system to podcasters, then implies that playback of this advertising for premium users is beyond their control. It's this kind of corporate Double-Speak that is so destructive to brand loyalty.

The issue here is that, by Spotify's own admission, THEY are offering this dynamic ad system to podcasters, which means they DO have the ability to block these ads for premium users - but they CHOOSE not to do this. This isn't a technical issue, it's a policy one.

WHAT SPOTIFY NEEDS TO DO

  1. Stop implying that Spotify can't block these ads for premium users, that's dishonest,
  2. Stop referring unhappy customers to a closed idea thread, that's either clueless or disrespectful,
  3. Block the playback of Spotify-inserted "dynamic" ads for premium users. Do it today.
  4. Announce the decision to block dynamic podcast ads for premium users far and wide,
  5. Bask in the glory of (belated) customer satisfaction.
  6. Don't bother apologising, no one takes corporate apologies seriously - just fix the issue.

All the best,

Its absolutely disgusting how they try to spin it like its not their fault.

Podcasters can put sponsors in their podcast themselves like they have always done, there was never a need for this. Implementing a function that makes ads able to play for premium users is such a dirty move and in my opinion a breach of trust with your customers. We are litterally paying for an ad-free experience when using your app, its the main reason we pay you.

Its painfully obvious they are just trying to squeeze more money out of their loyal customers so they dont have to pay podcasters as much themselves. I think they are gonna loose a lot of subscribers if this keeps going cause there are so many other great options for listening to music/podcasts who aren’t pulling this **bleep**.
