[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

Wow, all I can say is F you spotify, I think this might be the final straw that sends me over to Apple Music.

You took a billion years to release the Apple Watch app even after the APIs were available and it was always janky, then you too forever to allow music streaming and offline music. The app has had one small visual improvement recently after years of never changing, you haven't added any materially interesting features at all and now I get a GEO targeted ad on my podcast with a premium account. Why exactly am I paying you and not Apple?

Umm F you very much. You've become the very shitty corporate music industry death star you claimed you were against in the first place. So disappointing. Spotify is now a sad shadow of its former self.

En los podcast ahora me está apareciendo anuncios de publicidad siendo que tengo plan justamente para no tenerla??? Donde reclamo

Hey,

Thanks for reaching out. We hope you don't mind us replying in English.

Please note that podcasts usually include some advertising. This has been the case since the early days of podcasts, and continues to be true today, including on Spotify. Therefore, even as a Premium user, you may receive advertising or sponsored messages when playing a podcast. Note that as a Premium user, you still enjoy an ad-free music listening experience.

We hope this helps. Let us know if you have other questions.

My Question or Issue

Does anyone know why I’ve recently started getting ads in podcasts? They are not sponsored or a part of the podcast in any way they are completely irrelevant and extra ads by Spotify. Im extremely unhappy that I’m paying almost $20 per month to use this service without ads yet am still receiving them. If this is an issue that Spotify doesn’t care about fixing then recommendations for better services would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

It is a real shame that Spotify is passing the buck on this one by claiming it is up to the podcast creator as to whether ads are turned on or not. The truth is that there is an Ads delivery platform built by Spotify that is serving ads to premium users.  It is simply a money grab and that feels dirty.

I pay a monthly fee, happily, so that I don’t have to endure advertising - regardless of whether that content is music or a podcast. I have also noticed that some of the ‘music’ i listen to - soundscapes for relaxation and meditation - is starting to be put out as podcast episodes because i imagine the extra income is a no brainer for some creators.

You should at least give premium users the option to turn off ads on podcasts. Or, to exclude content that has ads from search results. It is only fair that we have such controls, since our premium fees already pay for the content we want to access and that payment is primarily to remove ads.

While listening to podcast I am still getting commercials even though I have a student premium account

ummm strange. i don’t see ad playback in my settings. i’m using the app rn

I pay extra for a premium subscription however, podcasts on the platform get around advertising by just reading off advertising scripts that can last minutes within the program.

Is there an avenue to pass along feedback requesting those host read endorsement ad scripts be removed for premium accounts that pay extra to not have advertisements interrupt programming?

I also have a premium account and encounter the ads in podcasts, while now we are 2023, this is still allowed to podcasters. I use meditations to fall asleep or wake up in the morning, they then get this at the end and all the vibes I worked towards then *pooffff vanishes in thin air. Please erase this option for podcasters and pay them through our account money, instead of by ads, what the money for the premium account actually should be used for.

Hey Spotify, I don't know if you know this. We can actually see your annual profits of over 3 billion dollars a year. There is absolutely no way you can claim to need ads to keep your business running.

You are getting paid by advertisers and by your premium members, which should honestly be illegal. And now you are making us pay for audiobooks?

I've paid for Spotify for many years, but this greed that is being blatantly shown in not just  allowing ads in podcasts, but INSERTING YOUR OWN ADS, will be your undoing.

I use sleep podcasts to fall asleep and the MOMENT I get an inserted ad (loud, obtrusive) I'm leaving your service. You CANNOT claim to have no control over these ads, they are not read out by the podcaster, they have their own titles, their own cover art, they are current (even giving me up to date information on sales for stores only in my area).

We are FED UP with your lying that you "have no control" and "need to pay for business expenses". That's what IM PAYING YOU FOR.

Stop treating us like idiots.
