[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

At this time, there is no option to report advertised music or podcasts. If a creator pays to have their content pushed to the top of my homepage, I cannot report or exclude their content. Subsequently, there's no options to mark a podcast to not show up in your algorithm like you can songs or artists.

I have 2 screenshots attached. 1 screenshot is the very top of my homepage, with a giant private section just for the Joe Rogan podcast. I don't care if anyone likes this podcast or not, I personally don't want to listen to it and would like to mark his content as such. The 2nd screenshot is of a random podcast that's also on my homepage. You can see multiple features that I don't have when right clicking the Joe Rogan podcast. Not only can I report or exclude normal podcasts, the Joe Rogan podcast doesn't offer any information on "Recommendations." This is a tell that this segment is an ad, not a recommendation from the algorithm.

I'm paying for Spotify Family Premium. I'm paying extra money to not have advertisements. I don't like that a creator can pay money to be above all rules and checks and balances of this service. Turning on tailored ads does nothing to change these issues. Spotify is pretending that this is natural content on my dash. So I have no option to interact with this ad, even though I have the ability to interact with normal ads that would play before a song. Since it's an ad, I have no option to interact with this content as I would normal content recommended through the algorithm.

This experience has severely harmed my experience on Spotify and calls into question what I'm actually paying for.

If you're going to show me an ad, don't pretend it's not an ad and hide ad specific features from your users. If you're going to treat advertised content as a recommendation, don't hide recommendation services from advertised podcasts and artists. At this time, you're lying to your users and hoping nobody will care enough to bring attention to it. At this time, Premium does not remove all ads from the users experience.

Can I pay extra for advertisement-free podcasts (i.e., Joe Rogan Experience)? I thought joining Premium would make his podcasts advertisement free, but I am still getting ads.

Paid for premium, still getting ads.

I have premium, while I was streaming a playlist to help me sleep at night I got suddenly woke up from one of your horrible commercials. How comes? This is totally unacceptable. Please let me know I completely lost my sleep because of it and freaked out. Not sure if keeping the membership at this point.
Kind regards,
Simona

I've noticed a similar issue with my premium family plan. I started listening to an older podcast series, so it's easy to tell the difference between the old podcast ads and the inserted ads. And the first couple of episodes were teasers. They were only a couple of minutes long. But I'd get slammed with two or three ads at the end of every episode and another set before the new episode begins. It was also the same three or four ads over and over again.

This is incorrect. For example, Spotify OWNS The Ringer podcast so that is Spotifys choice to insert ads. Stop casting the blame.

I will no longer listen to any Spotify podcasts until you remove the ads. Do people with YouTube Premium have to watch ads? No. Do people paying for a Netflix subscription have to watch ads? No. So why the **bleep** do Spotify Premium subscribers have to listen to ads every few minutes in every podcast episode? You say that you don't play ads with the music because "that would ruin the music listening experience", but the podcast listening experience matters as well. Nobody wants to pay a monthly fee and still have ads. It completely defeats the whole purpose of paying a subscription fee. 🙄

Come on Spotify. You must know that ads in podcasts for premium members is completely egregious. I don't pay for Spotify to listen to ads. I am giving it 1 more month and if this continues, I'm cancelling my premium. I've been a member for 11 years. Please take your premium members into consideration with this. I've read your replies as to why you have ads in podcasts and they're poor.

Yep…If Spotify don’t sort this rubbish out, I’m off to DEEZER!
