[Music] Local FLAC Playback

A member of spotify team said to separate the FLAC idea post, into FLAC local playback and FLAC streaming. Someone else can create a FLAC streaming post, as I'm only after local playback. The original post with the 2 ideas in one post is here.

Vote for this post if you want LOCAL PLAYBACK OF FLAC FILES ONLY.

WHY WE NEED SPOTIFY TO PLAY OUR FLAC COLLECTION
Spotify already plays ALAC, all be it with stability problems, but what we really need is local FLAC playback because FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless audio encoding. 7digital has recently started selling FLAC yet spotify can't play them. Why not???

http://www.7digital.com/find-music/7digital-recommends/flac

The most commercially successful band on the planet (The Beatles), have released official remastered versions of all albums in 24bitFLAC format on a usb device.

http://www.everythingusb.com/the-beatles-stereo-usb-limited-edition-17961.html

Numerous bands have sold albums in FLAC format through their websites. FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless encoding, so please start supporting local playback of FLAC.

Another idea that is important to me is fixing the appalling "set the same volume level for all tracks", which doesn't take into account the subtle volume transients of an album that audio engineers spend hours working on. The following volume normalization method retains the intended volume differences as part of the album.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for coming to the Ideas Exchange and sharing your feedback.

We're happy to inform you that this is now possible, so you can enjoy your local FLAC files through Spotify! Make sure to add them to Your Library, if you haven't already.

Thanks again for making Spotify better!

I don't mind if Spotify can't play FLACs, because they are large files that would make most users' bandwidths choke. I can take the music I already have with me on other devices. Spotify for me is to help me find new music. But I really need Spotify to recognize tracks I have that are FLACs so it doesn't recommend me songs I already like and have.

Come on spotify, this is an open format. Go on and implement it!

Please support FLAC, it would mean that I wouldn't need to convert from FLAC to MP3 saving one more step and duplicating all my files in another format while still meaning I can do all my listening in spotify.

I would LOVE to see this feature. I don't need to stream FLAC quality, but I would love to be able to port my FLAC library over to my desktop player or store it on my phone/tablet in the Spotify app. You can definitely hear the difference in a well-done recording, and I have a lot of really good equipment I'd like to take advantage of.

Spotify playing FLAC would mean I don't have to run two media players to listen to my music anymore.

I think its really bad that you cant play flac files in spotify. In the end i might have to look for another option.. maby wimp ?

Hey, a relatively uncommon guy like NEIL YOUNG has decided to create a FLAC based player, which has obtained 2.5 MILLIONS on Kickstarter in a few days. Maybe it's time you consider supporting it; just a friendly advise for you guys.

I seen that myself. although Neil Young isn't uncommon lol. Every album he ever does soars in the rock charts and as a result, that's why he's got the $millions and the balls to do this thing. Neil Young's got friends in high places and he's struck deals with the major labels for the forthcoming FLAC music store. The service ain't out yet although I'm keeping an eye on it.

On paper the player he's worked on looks pretty good (it can play back up to 24bit - 192khz FLAC files - these files are MASSIVE in file size though (e.g. CD's are only 44.1khz).

to qoute from the website. "The PonoMusic Store uses FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) audio format as its standard, for compatibility, although the PonoPlayer can play most popular high-resolution music formats from other sources.  PonoMusic has a quality spectrum, ranging from really good to really great, depending on the quality of the available master recordings:

 •    CD lossless quality recordings: 1411 kbps (44.1 kHz/16 bit) FLAC files
•    High-resolution recordings: 2304 kbps (48 kHz/24 bit) FLAC files
•    Higher-resolution recordings: 4608 kbps (96 kHz/24 bit) FLAC files
•    Ultra-high resolution recordings: 9216 kbps (192 kHz/24 bit) FLAC files"

Some of the lyrics in the first song, on the album "Psychedelic Pill" by Neil Young (the album came number 2 on the US top rock album charts).

"I'm driftin' back

Don't want my mp3

Don't want my mp3

I'm driftin' back

When you hear my song now
You only get five percent
You used to get it all

Blocking out my anger
Blocking out my thoughts"

I'm glad we're not the only ones that hate compressed music.

Yeah, it was a twist of irony, hah.

I have just seen this other announce five minutes ago. Take a look at the resolution of the download card files:

Led Zeppelin are great. The Led zeppelin CD's I've got are remasters done by Page in the 90s and I love the way they sound so much that I'll never replace them with 2496. There's a lot of CD's however, that I'm not happy with the audio quality. Sometimes it's down to the "loudness war" where they DR compress the CD, so that the CD sounds louder than another CD, when played back at precisely the same volume.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war

http://dr.loudness-war.info/

Would love to hear better Jimi Hendrix remasters (these CD's are just one example). The latest remasters were a bit too DR compressed in my opinion and the original CD's from the 80s sound tinny.

I'm really hoping they don't DR compress the forthcoming FLAC store.

HDtracks have been putting out some brickwalled mixes in large files and they're too scared to complain to the record labels about it. It's absolutely pointless encoding compressed mixes in large 2496 files, hell it's even pointless at 1644.

FLAC is a must!
If you re a music lover you hate mp3 and love flac.
I understand the bandwidth issue so I accept Spotify files in the lame 360 kbps format but...
most of my local files have the flac format, so I cannot play them on Sportify..
This discussion here lasts for 2 years, nothing changed around the issue.
If thereá another music service like Spotify supporting flac, I'm gone here.
