[Music] Local FLAC Playback

A member of spotify team said to separate the FLAC idea post, into FLAC local playback and FLAC streaming. Someone else can create a FLAC streaming post, as I'm only after local playback. The original post with the 2 ideas in one post is here.

Vote for this post if you want LOCAL PLAYBACK OF FLAC FILES ONLY.

WHY WE NEED SPOTIFY TO PLAY OUR FLAC COLLECTION
Spotify already plays ALAC, all be it with stability problems, but what we really need is local FLAC playback because FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless audio encoding. 7digital has recently started selling FLAC yet spotify can't play them. Why not???

The most commercially successful band on the planet (The Beatles), have released official remastered versions of all albums in 24bitFLAC format on a usb device.

Numerous bands have sold albums in FLAC format through their websites. FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless encoding, so please start supporting local playback of FLAC.

Another idea that is important to me is fixing the appalling "set the same volume level for all tracks", which doesn't take into account the subtle volume transients of an album that audio engineers spend hours working on. The following volume normalization method retains the intended volume differences as part of the album.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for coming to the Ideas Exchange and sharing your feedback.

We're happy to inform you that this is now possible, so you can enjoy your local FLAC files through Spotify! Make sure to add them to Your Library, if you haven't already.

Thanks again for making Spotify better!

Another good Lossless audio read for ideas, comparisons etc:

Currently the Best free ones are: FLAC, Wavpack and TAK.

Many more that are not free, Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, MLP etc.

The Wavpack Lossless Format

TAK Lossless in German

Use Google Translate if need be. https://translate.google.com

Also, JRiver v22 will be implementing the SOX Resampler SOX Site. Anyone familiar with audio encoding, ripping etc will appreciate this.

Cant understand why you are unwilling to satisfy customers (premium here) or take new onboard by enabling FLAC local playback since it is so easy like you confirmed already. I have just finished my NAS build with large FLAC collection for my HiFi. I will give you month, after that I will cancel my subscription since you have no value added comparing to other services (see you on Deezer) (btw how many people need to vote to actually give a sh&t?)

Just use ffmpeg to convert flac to alac.  They are practically the same; alac is just Apple's version of flac for legal reasons.  There should be no loss of quality and it should work fine.

Tidal has Flacc support. 😛

I'm guessing there's some contractual obligations holding this back.

in any case. As feedback goes I too want this feature, and more. It would be awesome if you combine this with some music locker service, a button "buy lossless" or something (full rights, no fingerprinting **bleep**, lossless copies of the album) and have it available for playback on all devices (some file syncing and caching involved here, perhaps partner up with Dropbox?)

Also, for extra credit, perhaps you could deal with the record companies to let you use the sources for vinyl release for this. HDR seems to be the big thing in TV right now, perhaps the button should be branded with "buy HDR release" 😉

Spotify better wake up and realize that if they dont upgrade their system to stream higher quality audio ppl will start flocking somewhere else..

Such a pity that the Spotify team refuses listen to their customers. This has been requested for several years and their response is basically, "no, you guys aren't important enough and not worth the effort". It's a little insulting. What's worse is that the Spotify rep admitted that local FLAC playback wouldn't be difficult to implement.

can't believie that this thread even has to exist...

so yeah flac was an uncommon format a few years ago. well, times have changed.

it's not like we're asking for vinyl playback...pls devs make this happen 🙂 then I can finally get rid of my other player which I have only been using for my flacs.

Status changed to: Not Right Now
Updated: 2016-12-14

Hey everyone. We want to let you all know we are still keeping an eye on this idea and we know it has continued to grow since originally being posted in 2012. At the moment the status is still 'Not Right Now' as this is not a current priority. We're bringing your feedback to the teams and we'll post again if something changes. Thanks!

This is good news. We are on their radar again. Good job everyone on your comments. The only way we will make a difference is if more people start complaining. The market right now is flooded with other audio streaming companies and they are all competing for our $. I'm a premium customer and I know many others who are willing to leave spotify if they don't make some changes. Tell everyone you know about this and get them to comment. It's the only way that these guys will wake up. Come on, let's lay the hammer. We are paying customers, we have a voice.
