[iOS][Other] Support for older USB car stereos that can only read iPods

I would love to be able to plug in my iPhone to my older vehicles through the USB ports and be able to select songs/playlists, have playback controls as well as see album art. Right now when I plug in my iPhone with spotify only installed it says "no music files found" and nothing will play. This seems to happen on most cars that use the dock connector interface which was common on cars from the last decade before Apple CarPlay was a thing.

When I plugged in an iPhone that had an Apple Music trial, all track info as well as playlists/songs showed up in the car menus. Because of Spotify not correctly recognizing dock connector interfaces, Spotify can't be controlled over the USB which is frustrating.

It would be amazing if we had support for these older iPod dock connector car radios such as mine. Especially for users who don't have Bluetooth audio like me and don't have a headphone jack to connect to the AUX port. This would also make it safer to switch songs while driving, as everything would be on the car's screen instead of messing with your phone.

I have uploaded images describing what happens I plug the phone in and what would happen if everything worked correctly.

Image 1: This is what is happening when I plug the phone in. Spotify is the only music app installed.

Image 2 and 3: This is what it would look like if there was music playing on the iPhone through USB as well as the menus that can be used to change the music. Would be awesome if I can switch my spotify playlists and songs through these menus.

I totally agree with you. If you think about it there really isn't any "real" USB accessory support besides Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Spotify could definitely show some love to older vehicles/devices that don't have those luxuries

I agree with the completely

used to use Spotify primarily a while back, and now I’ve returned to it - but not having music controls on my car head unit is a bit of a pain.

works fine with Apple Music.. but I don’t want to use that

@rooshen it's been about a year since I posted this.. unfortunately I don't think spotify will get anywhere with it, but if it helps, in my car if I turn on repeat mode (looping not continuous) music controls seem to work fine through the iPod port using spotify. i think it's an issue with the queueing system, the car cannot read spotify's music queue but since apple music is a core part of iOS the headunit has access to that data among other things
