I really enjoy the Spotify service, and have since before I could even legally do so in this country.
With that said, there's a very serious issue that I'd like to find a way to address: There are thousands and thousands of cheap knock-off cover songs that are attributed to the original artists, but actually aren't. For instance, there are about 15 different versions of "Day After Day" by Badfinger...but not a single one of them is the original recording with Pete Ham on vocals, the one that's actually the hit. They're all re-recordings, retrofits, etc., and it's just not the same song. Their version of "Without You" is the same way, and there are who knows how many artists with the same problem. Any time I make a playlist, I end up deleting about half of it because on listening I realize that a track which appears to be listed as the original is actually a muzak-version or some other non-original.
I understand there's a lot of complication internationally with music licensing and everything, but it seems like some kind of verification badge or star or something, similar to the mechanisms used to identify legitimate celebrities/public figures on Twitter and (as of recently) Facebook could be implemented. I don't mind people doing covers, and I've done plenty of them myself over the years, but it really irks me that when I want to listen to e.g. Badfinger, I end up inflating some cheap hack's dimestore insult to the original material instead. When I want to hear "Mr. Bojangles by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band," that's what I want to hear. Not "Mr. Bojangles 'in the style of' the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band," not "Mr. Bojangles rendered as a bland acoustic guitar cover for pleasant grocery shopping and elevator riding."
Sorry, I know it's not your fault...but it really irritates me, especially as a musician. Thoughts, anyone?
