Mood and Genre filters for “Liked Songs”

Beginning today, Spotify is rolling out a new feature for both Free and Premium users in several countries who have a sizable collection of Liked Songs and use the mobile app (iOS or Android).

If you reside in the US, CA, UK, IE, AU, NZ, or ZA and have at least 30 tracks saved to your library, this new feature allows you to filter your Liked Songs by genres and moods.

You can use this new feature by navigating to “Your Library” and tapping “Liked Songs”; there, you can select one of the filters that appear above the Liked Songs playlist, in order to view a subset of tracks that represent that particular genre or mood. By tapping the “x” icon next to the filter, you can remove the selected genre or mood, and thereby return to your complete Liked Songs collection.

There are currently hundreds of genre and mood filters for Liked Songs, which will be continuously updated and optimized over time. A genre or mood needs to have at least 15 represented tracks saved to your Liked Songs in order for it to appear there as a filter; and you can have up to 15 filters available, which are based on the tracks that you’ve saved to your Spotify library. In this way, the number and types of genre/mood filters (as well as the order in which they appear) update automatically as you add or remove Liked Songs from your library.

During the test for this feature, I had found the sorting of my Liked Songs into several genres of music to be rather fun to explore. For the most part, my Liked Songs seemed to be sorted into appropriate genres during the test and aligned closely with my expectation of which genre(s) each artist’s music represents; only rarely did I notice a few tracks that seemed out of place within the genre filter for which they appeared.

I’m glad that the genre and mood filters for Liked Songs are now being released as a feature, especially since the information that they provide is useful for deciding which tracks to add to the genre-themed playlists that I’ve created on Spotify; up until now, I’ve typically looked to other resources such as Last.fm to find out which “genre tags” apply to my favorite music, and thereby guide which tracks I add to these playlists. The ability to filter one’s saved tracks into individual genres or moods within the Spotify app itself presents a convenient alternative (or additional) resource for this purpose.

You may also find this new feature for the mobile app to be quite beneficial if you’d like to listen to music that you enjoy within a particular genre or mood, without needing to create or search for another Spotify playlist outside of Liked Songs, as well as if you’re simply curious to get an idea about what “types” of music your favorite songs can be classified into.

However you make use of the new genre and mood filters for your Liked Songs, I think that this feature is an exciting and welcome addition for the mobile app. Feel free to add a comment and share your thoughts on how you find the new genre and mood filters for Liked Songs to be.

Sick, I hope this catches on for other countries too, need this.

Question though, how is the mood determined? Are we able to make custom moods too or set the ourselves? Sound alike a lot of work to give each song a mood!

Great question, @Ninnas!

This feature won’t allow users to make custom moods; rather, "personalized" here means that Spotify will pre-select the moods/genres that best suit users’ listening preferences.

You can also check out this Newsroom article for more information about how the filters will work.

Have a good day!

I’m not sure if there are any devs that still look at these threads but I’m wondering if there are any updates.

I live in California and was hoping this update would have arrived for me by now. Understand rollout can take awhile but seems most people have it by now

Hi @Hollentatonix,

Thanks for reaching out to the Spotify Community!

I recommend trying a clean reinstall by following these steps, as it might be the case that you don’t currently have this feature on your mobile Spotify app due to missing updates.

Let me know how it goes, and have a good day!

When will it be available for the rest of the world

Hi @Dreamwastaken,

Thanks for reaching out to the Spotify Community!

Spotify doesn’t currently have information about mood and genre filters for Liked Songs launching in other markets. However, I recommend keeping your Spotify app up-to-date so that you don't miss it if this feature is made available in your country.

Have a good day!

When are we going to see a global rollout for this feature? 🙂

I’m back @TreyAnastasio

I know you’re not a dev or anything but appreciate the help anyways. I tried a clean reinstall of Spotify but still have not received the genre filter option though I am up-to-date  (iOS 8.6.22).

However, I HAVE received the feature to sort my entire library (via artist, album, playlists, podcasts). It functions similar to the genre filter.

Thanks again

EDIT: My phone is in Spanish because I use it to learn. I changed Spotify to English and the feature showed right up. SO EXCITED!!

Hi @TreyAnastasio

While waiting for this feature to be available for the rest of the world(I'm from Taiwan btw), I would like to ask if there is a possibility to have a language filter in the future as well. It would be very helpful if I can filter my Liked Songs according to languages. Thanks!

Hi @Janesey,

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community!

I think that this is a great idea as well, and I recommend submitting it to the Idea Exchange of the Spotify Community.

You can read about what you need to know before submitting your idea to the Idea Exchange in this FAQ article; and you can read about how to submit your idea here, where you’ll find a submission link under “How do I submit my idea?”.

The more votes an idea gets, the likelier it is that Spotify will implement it; and you can read more about how feedback on ideas reaches Spotify here.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and have a good day!

I do not like this update at all and the bubbles make my UI unbearably messy and ugly. Do we have an option to remove the filters? I mean no bubbles at all in the Liked Songs page?

Hi @xc99999,

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community!

Unfortunately, there isn’t currently an option to remove the mood and genre filters at the top of your Liked Songs playlist. However, you can feel free to submit this idea in the Idea Exchange of the Spotify Community.

Hi @Janesey,

I wanted to clear things up regarding my previous reply, as there is currently an idea for filtering Liked Songs by language in the Idea Exchange.

While the status of this idea is currently “Closed  - Not Enough Votes,” it can become an active idea again if it gains sufficient votes.

I recommend adding your +VOTE to this idea; and you can disregard my previous suggestion to create a new Idea Submission for this potential feature.

Apologies for the confusion. Let me know if you have any other questions, and have a good day!
