Spotify paints it black with new look

New Spotify Look

Today we’re launching the best-looking Spotify ever. Introducing a new darker theme, refreshed typography and rounded iconography, playing your favourite music has never looked so good.

We’re not only improving our looks though. We know how much you love playlists, but that you’ve been looking for more ways of managing your music. So today we’re introducing Your Music: helping you save, organise and browse your favourite music the way you want to. All in one place, and across all platforms.

Building your personal music collection just got a lot easier.

  • Content is king. Our new design makes accessing your favourite music smoother than ever before. The new dark theme and refined interface lets the content come forward and ‘pop’, just like in a cinema when you dim the lights.
  • It’s Your Music collection. Save albums and browse their beautiful cover art, gather your favourite artists and create playlists for every mood and moment. Found a song or album that you like? Just hit save to add it to your collection. It’s that simple.
  • We know you’ll love it. We’ve listened to all your great feedback to ensure that everything looks and feels just right. You told us you preferred a darker interface – so here it is.

We’re also improving our Browse feature, delivering even more relevant and localised content. So regardless of whether you’re looking for something to fall asleep to, or the perfect playlist to get you geared up for your big night out, finding the right music for every moment is easier than ever.

Our new design, Your Music and the updated Browse will roll out gradually to our iPhone, desktop and web users from today, and will soon be available across all platforms.

Welcome to the dark side.

Spacebar no longer plays/pauses in the web interface, depending on what frame's focused. Tons of alignment issues. To adjust the volume, you have to carefully track your pointer directly upwards after hovering over the icon - otherwise it disappears. This is just what I've noticed in five minutes of using it.

Any way I can go back to the interface that works? If forcing this beta on everybody is an April Fool's joke, it's a cruel one.

There do seem to be a number of small issues with the iOS release, many of which have been reported in this thread - rest assured these have been reported to the Spotify guys behind the scenes.

This has actually been in beta testing for some time @NotMyName , although some of the issues you have reported where reported in the beta area but have not yet been fixed. I definitely remember seeing a web developer post here on the community saying the volume bar issue for one is a known issue they are working on.

I do have to agree, the design is pretty awesome. But one complaint. The album artwork used to be high resolution on the iPhone. The album art quality is horrible now. It's one of the parts of Spotify that I loved but now it's gone.

The low quality album art bug as well as the local files album art bug have been reported several times to the iOS developers. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next update.

I just want my update 😞

I always seem to be the last to get updates when there's a rollout :(:(

I am sorry to bother you, but where did you get that Version from? I can only get or so 😕

Thanks a LOT!

Your client will auto update once the roll out reaches your account @Seme332 (providing you haven't modified Spotify or downloaded 0.9.8 directly from an unofficial source).

What happens if we've got it from an unofficial source?

How long does it take to reach all accounts if I may ask?

At the rate Spotify been rolling out updates before, I guess it will reach everyone by 2015. =p

@edumadrid1601 - I think the "unofficial" version which has been floating around has a patch in it to disable the auto-updater as if it wasn't disabled, it would have actually downgraded you to 0.9.7 since that is the version the Spotify system would have thought you should have had.

If you have installed the unofficial installer thing, I would suggest removing it and re-installing from

Done, Thank you, now, it would be nice if possible to know how long has spotify thinks it will reach users?, aside i subscribe to the beta for your music, will the not having the latest version unable me to the beta? or will the me having installed the .8.2... version then downgrade to the .7.1... affect that too?

Unfortunately, I don't work for Spotify so I don't know the numbers, but since the new design went completely live on iOS today, hopefully it won't be long!

What versions you have had installed previously shouldn't make any difference once the roll out reaches your account.

so to get this straight: the desktop/ios7/ and web are all being rolled out at different times to different customers? And NOT with YOUR MUSIC correct? cuz I have the ios7 update, and the web update, but not the mac desktop update. None have YOUR MUSIC even though I signed up for beta tester, which I guess will come soon? Although if it doesn't have genre sorting I will not be happy but seems like it would. All the others do.

Updated to the latest at home last night, wasn't expecting such a drastic change!

First impressions (desktop application):

  • Not a fan of the black background - harsher on the eyes when switching between applications since most other things are not on such a dark background. White (or almost white) text on such a dark background is just too much.
  • The additional spacing (track list, side bar with playlists, and friend feed) makes for a lot of additional scrolling. It makes me really want the ability to hide things like Browse, Discover, Apps, Your Music, etc. because I don't use them. It's wasted space to me and even more so now. Overall I'm able to see so much less on my screen than I can with the previous version.
  • I like some of the cleaner UI elements but they're drastically overshadowed by the above.

I can see that this new version is much more touch-friendly. I bet if I was using it on a tablet or a touch-enabled Windows PC, it might be awesome. But aren't there apps for that? This is the desktop application we're talking about. Does it need to be touch-friendly? What percentage of users using the desktop application are also using a touch device? I'm guessing pretty low. All in all I'm all for good spacing but when compared to the previous version it just hurts usability and adds frustration.

Curious how I'm going to feel about the new iOS version. Being a touch-device, if there's extra spacing it may not be an issue for me. I also don't mind black backgrounds so much on my phone, since dark backgrounds are encountered more often in that scenario versus desktop usage. Ok I decided to download it just now before submitting this post - and it turns out I really like the look of the iOS app, very clean and easy to use so far. Kudos for that one!

But please, think about the desktop one and how people are actually using it. A background color toggle would be amazing, too, at the very least. My eyes - they hurt! I'll be holding on to the previous version on my work computer for as long as I can.

Where is the Library folder that has all of the songs from our playlists and stuff in it? I hope you didn't get rid of it.

The new design looks great.  I've previously used Rdio and this design is on par.

I've been trying a free 90-day trial of Beats Music (via AT&T).  I've like Spotify much more and this new design pretty much hammers it home.  I'm still waiting for the Spotify Collections (My Music).

I would like to see Spotify add some type of music curation like Songza.  Beats' "The Sentence" isn't that great -- poor music selections come up.  Also, a family plan would be nice to match Beats.

But this new design is looking great and will keep me on Spotify.

So let me get this straight. The only update that all users actually get is the new design? If you want the "your music" section, you need to apply for the beta?

As far as I understand it, Your Music has two upgrade paths:
- Random roll out (which is happening now, but will happen slowly over a period of time like normal feature releases).
- Beta applications (which will give you access quicker)

I see. Well the random roll out could literally take months if they apply the same strategy/policy as before. Thanks anyway.

Would you apply for the beta? Is it stable? I obviously realize it's a beta.
