UPDATE - April 8th, 2021

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday we published a blog post on our engineering blog which goes into more details on the new UI, the reasons behind it and the process of building it.  If you'd like to read a few more details like that you can check it out here.

I'd also like to mention a few things coming in upcoming versions of Desktop

  • We're working on bringing back a list-like Discography view, something many of you have mentioned missing in the new UI.  We expect this to land in an upcoming release, so do watch this space and make sure you remain fully updated.
  • "Discovered On" playlists for artists will be back in an upcoming release.
  • We're working on bringing to Desktop the ability (like in our mobile apps) to see all the saved songs by a particular artist from within the artist page itself.  Again this will be arriving in an upcoming Desktop release.

Thanks,
Dan

ORIGINAL POST -----

Hi everyone

Dan here from the Desktop team again. I wanted to make another post to once again thank you all for your continued feedback, and also give a little more detail about what we’re doing from here on in.

In short, the new user interface is the future of the Spotify Desktop client, and over the coming weeks we’ll roll out the new UI to all Desktop users. Many of you will have noticed already, but we’ve based the new experience on the more modern and scalable Web Player codebase, and in doing so made both versions more aligned and easier to use than ever before.

Why are we making this change?

We believe in the future of the Desktop platform and want to make sure it can still serve the needs of our users now and into the future.

The existing Desktop UI codebase became increasingly hard to maintain as time went on, and you may have noticed a growing gap between the Desktop and Mobile apps in some cases. For those of you interested in the technical details, a blog post on the engineering blog is coming soon. The short story, however, is that our desire to continue pushing Desktop forward and bringing new features to it became incompatible with the reality of maintaining the legacy experience.

Meanwhile, we had a Web Player serving similar user needs, but built in a much more modern and scalable way — with a more cohesive Spotify “look & feel”. We therefore resolved to use the Web Player UI code as the basis for both Web and Desktop in the future, and have been spending quite some bringing the Desktop-class features that you’ve come to expect to this shared platform. You’ve had a sneak peek of this as we’ve been testing and building things out, so once again I’d like to thank you for both being a part of it and giving great feedback on this thread that has definitely helped us improve.

Benefits of this approach

Firstly, I’d like to say that this really is a new beginning for the Desktop app. Long-term Desktop users will start to notice more rapid iteration on the app than they’ve seen in the past.

I’d like to call out some of the things in the new Desktop, and also give you a little taste of what’s to come.

Design - We’ve focused on consistency, are using more color to enhance the experience where appropriate, and are making better use of cover art and album images in the app. We're also better aligned to other platforms, put an increased focus on accessibility, interactions and animations, and have tightened up our design language, so it’s more in line with what users have come to expect from Spotify.

Functionality - We’ve brought the functionality that users expect from Desktop, like sorting/filtering, drag & drop, and advanced settings and options, whilst improving areas like playlist creation and curation, profile pages, and more. In many cases these improvements have landed in the Web Player, so the work here has benefited our combined users on both platforms.

Tip! You’ll also find new keyboard shortcuts for many tasks (press ctrl+? to see them) which makes certain actions much faster and easier for any user.

We are also aware that there are a few aspects raised in the community that haven't been fully addressed as part of this update, but items like the Search Bar and discography on artist pages have ultimately been brought closer in line with other Spotify applications. That said, we will continue to iterate on the experience across both platforms moving forward.

The future of Desktop

As mentioned above, this change to the Desktop UI gives us the ability to move faster in bringing you new improvements, features and functionality — so you can expect to see continued improvements to the client in the weeks and months to come.

Once again, I’d like to thank you all for helping us shape the Desktop App over the past year on behalf of everyone here at Spotify, and please do continue to post your feedback and use our Ideas section here in the Community to tell us what you’d like to see and why.

Thanks again,

Dan

PLEASE BRING BACK DISCOGRAPHY VIEW! I need to see all the songs in one list, not each album in a grid. PLEASE!!!!

My Spotify updated today and the 'copy' and 'paste' function has been restored, but sadly not 'cut' for some reason.  Also restored is double clicking on the small picture bottom left in a playlist now selects the corresponding track in the list again.

It is a small start in the right direction I suppose, but how did these issues get past the testing phase of the disaster that is the new UI in the first place?

I am hoping the next issue to get rectified is a playlist always going to the top whenever it is re-entered which is doing my head in.

Apparently the new app update removed the ability to bring back the old UI. It only reminded me how ridiculous the new one is and made me uninstall Spotify from my Mac. Good that there are historic builds out there to be installed. Hopefully I managed to lock it from future updates. Will see if it's going to work.

Seriously. It looks just broken while compared to the old one. Desktop app should stay a desktop app, not a scaled up version of mobile app (which is fine for me). Everything looks clunky, huge, with large gaps between contents. Playlists without artist column are terrible to navigate. Artist page without all the tracks being instantly accessible are messy and complicate a simple task of quickly finding a right song. That was enough for me not to dig deeper and probably be even more disappointed with other 'improvements'. Using it now is just frustrating.

Alright, list.... Please paste it on a poster, put it on Spotify's fridge!!! And knock off each checkmark like a checklist:
[ ]1: The UI looks and feels like total trash...
[ ]2: No one asked for a UI update... FIX IT, do not touch it again (UNTIL) you have received (MAJOR) positive feedback and actually have someone in charge that knows what they're doing! We aren't bored of it... It's not boring...
[ ]3: What is this Facebook thing in the right of my screen?! How long is that going to remain there until I connect my Facebook when I don't want to...
[ ]4: No one complained that the search bar was in the way or cluttering anything... So why was it moved?
[ ]5: Your library, what is all this?! I don't listen to podcasts or radio shows so what are these buttons on top littering my screen!!!! They were perfectly fine in the left menu!
[ ]6: What happened to my search history!!! It's a bunch of HUGE blocks taking up the entire top of my display as apposed to the simple, web browser style search history in a sleek and simple text list with tiny album arts!
[ ]7: Why was this update released to ONLY premium users, which encourages people to stop paying premium to have the original UI back...
[ ]8: Why is there an equalizer on mobile, but not on desktop!!
[ ]9: What happened to animated artwork for songs and albums on mobile! And why not add them to desktop?!
[ ]10: What happened to the visualizer! I realize this is older but why not add this back instead?! MANY people always wanted this, something to dance along to music, instead have to use badly scripted thrid party that can steal my info?!
[ ]11: What happened to song based radio! Now when a song is finished playing, it repeats, EVEN though I have it on shuffle with no repeat, it repeats...
[ ]12: What happened to Discover? Can't discover anything if spotify only shows announcements now...
[ ]13: My search history and favorites were wiped, and now I cannot figure out how to see my followed artists, WHICH IS IMPORTANT because I follow a lot of unknown people with no listens and like to support tiny tiny tiny artists
[ ]14: What happened to customizing the UI myself, by adding themes, backgrounds, etc.... This used to be a feature way way back that was nice!
[ ]15: Why are artists albums and arts so big now too?! They're blimps on my screen, taking up most of the space you're wasting... None of us using 12K monitors dude that make icons THAT small. Even then if it's an issue, make a setting "Large icons, medium, small"
[ ]16: Why is the create playlist ABOVE my library, and not ontop of my playlists, that makes no sense at all!
[ ]17: No Discography... No info on artists, cannot see how many likes, followers, or where they had concerts
[ ]18: Discover On isn't there anymore? I can't see what other songs feature same artists!
[ ]19: Date added? Now you cannot see when a song was released...

THERE, grocery list!! Have at her!!! 🙂
(My list should not be this long)

1) Bring back the separate row for artists in playlists. How could that even have been an idea
somebody had? So much empty space. I don't feel I will ever get used to not having that.
2) When I am switching around in playlists and going back and forth between them, don't reset the playlist
back to the top of the list when I return, leave it where I was at like it used to. So much
extra unnecessary scrolling involved. User friendly? No!
3) Make the recommended list at the bottom of the playlist an option like it was before. Most
of the time the songs recommended are already in the playlist. Bring back the option.
4) The number plays list on each album is very distracting.

I'm discovering more annoying and user un-friendly changes as I go but these are my most annoying and made no sense to change them. Since it's being forced on your customers it
would be a good idea to listen to us.
