That sweet introductoray scene in your favourite low-fi indie movie. The one with bear foot running across a wet stone beach, dizzy-spinning round in circles, and a light showering rainfall that hits the cold ocean on a warm night. As mascara runs down the main characters cheeks, and bright laughter mixes in with a gentle caution to the wind attitude, this song plays. Well, for me that’s what this creative indie-pop, playful-rock bunch will spring to mind upon first listen anyway!
Excited yet? In this week’s Tip-Off, it's Hajk.
I can’t get enough of their home-made uplifting vibe, so let’s pop ‘Best Friend’ on in the background and get to know them.
We’ve done some digging to find out that Preben Sælid Andersen and Sigrid Aase provide those fresh vocals... while multitasking on guitar and percussion too. Johan Nord keeps heads nodding on drums, Knut Olav Buverud Sandvik steals the bass, and Einar Næss Haugeth takes it away on Keys.
Instrumentally, they provide a familiar feeling conventional line up, but musically, they push a refreshing twist on indie-pop to deliver something new.
Their debut album’s self titled, so you won’t have to worry about getting right to it in the app. Just search Hajk, and you’re away.
After releasing their debut, it looks like things picked up pretty quickly for them. With airplay, festival slots, and a fair bit of industry recognition shortly following their studio time.
How do they create something so simplistic and spacious feeling, while also driving up that positive groove? I’m not sure, but it works. So it’s hardly surprising they captured plenty of heart strings in no time.
It’s hard not to love a bit of funky layering, and their mix of harmony shots and youthful lyrics ensure the album stays refreshing from start to finish. With Summertime in full swing here now, it’s a pretty easy choice for the party mix.
