My Question or Issue

Weird glitch that I have been experiencing for month already. One update fixes it, the next Update brings it back:

Band names (not the Text in the App itself though) are Shown in the japanese Alphabet, so The Band Muse would be shown as ミュース, FKA Twigs becomes FKA ツイックand so on.

My iPhone is German, System Language is German, App Store is German…

I do have the Japanese and the Chinese Keyboard installed though.

So I checked App Language AND iPhone Language, both are set to German. Switched to English, Japanese, back to German - Nothing helps. The App will change Language as selected, artist names will still appear in the Japanese Alphabet.

Anyone ever experienced something like this?

Hello , I just had the same problem . I searched here for a solution but none of the ones here rlly helped. But I found a solution : I also had my app on German and I also am on iOS , I first switched to the Japanese version of the app in the settings , and then to the English version , then it was fixed.

you probably already found a way to fix it, I am only writing this for the people in the future that have the same problem. 👍

Hey there @leonextint!

Thanks for reaching out! 👋

Just to let you know, the teams are currently looking into this behavior, and we really appreciate you flagging it.

In the meantime, here are a couple of workarounds you can try:

  • Switch your device settings to the Japanese version of the app, and then back to Spanish to see if that helps.

  • If you have Japanese listed as one of your keyboard’s preferred languages, try removing it temporarily and check if it makes any difference.

If none of these help, it would be super helpful if you could share the Spotify version you’re currently using.

Keep me posted on how it goes!

Done both neither of them worked

Alright @leonextint! Thanks for the quick reply.

Can you share with us the Spotify version you're using?

Keep me in the loop!

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out!

@Soniyata, glad to hear you've found a fix and thanks for sharing it here, we appreciate it!

@Teamiceberg, if switching the language settings didn't do the trick, can you try removing Japanese and Chinese from your keyboard languages temporarily to see if that makes a difference? In case the issue is still present afterwards, can you let us know the Spotify version you're running

Keep us posted.

After a long time, the issue reemerged for me, just when got notified about these responses here.

Some fancy Gwen Stefani and Saint Vincent attached.

I have the exact some problem and neither changing the system nor the app language fixes it. I also don‘t have a japanese keyboard activated.

This isn't a big issue but I want to know how to fix this. I listen mostly to japanese songs and bands, but now bands whose names are in english are being displayed in japanese. This doesn't happen with every band, but happens to many, even with ones I haven't listened or have listened once or twice. This has happenes 1 or 2 years ago with my sister (with japanese too, I believe she had just started to listen to japanese songs at that time when it happened) and with my friend's dad, but with hebraic. I am 100% sure I did not click on anything by accident or changed any settings.
This only happens in my phone. I use Spotify on my laptop too but it is normal (at least until now, this bug happened around two days ago).
The bands displayed in the screenshot are My Chemical Romance and Green Day, but this has happened with other bands too.

My Question or Issue

How do I make it stop displaying the names in japanese...

IMG_5633.jpg

Good to see that I’m not the only one with this problem and that it is a recent development.

in my case my phone is on Dutch language and I installed a Romanji Japanese keyboard since I’m learning Japanese.

some artists names are displayed in Japanese, like the Beatles and George Michael. Others are still in English, like Dire straits and Gorillaz

Fun fact: These are the (worldwide) last.fm scrobbles for マック・ミラー, so Mac Miller in Japanese. The first spike in plays is the first time I experienced this glitch, now we‘re on the second spike. Interesting to see the dimensions of this bug.

Yeah, this issue has been going on for a long time... Like I said, same thing happened to my sister maybe two years ago, and she never found out how to fix it. I'm pretty sure a few months later it just changed back to normal randomly.

The reason why some artists change to the japanese alphabet and others don‘t is because their japanese transcription has been included in their artist accounts by spotify.

So bands that won‘t change their names for you will even appear in the roman alphabet for people in japan. (Jon Hopkins, Caroline Polachek)

If I play japanese Artists now I even see their Kanji names, like Eiko Ishibashi becoming 石橋英子, which rules out a generic roman to japanese alphabet translation routine.

Thanks. Do you know how can I fix that?

I have no idea. I guess the next update will fix it.

My Question or Issue

How do I stop song titles from being translated? I'm listening to Japanese songs and I want the song titles to be displayed in Japanese instead of English. I listen to music in different languages, so changing the system language is not a solution.

wrong language for interpreters

Chinese characters for various songs and artists.
App reinstalled and language reset, no improvement
