Limit to 'offline' playlists?

Solved!

Limit to 'offline' playlists?

I just spotted something in your FAQ about a limit of 3,333 tracks offlined? Is this true, and if so can you explain why? I realise as you need to re-sync updated tracks for all sorts of reasons, if someone has thousands of tracks offline then they could be re-syncing forever - but I have sort of got into the habit of offlining ever since the problems we had with BT throttling Spotify! It's great having a streaming service for music discovery, but here in the UK our broadband infrastructure is so flaky we can't rely on being able to use your service all the time if we don't offline. I tend to offline anything I 'collect', am I not using Spotify as you expect I should I wonder?

Thinking of switching to Google Play Music, ad even though I enjoy all that is Spotify, unless I can get 10,000 songs on my phone, my subscription is rendered pretty useless... Google Play has no download limits, but it would be a sad day if I had to ditch Spotify so I could enjoy the new Beatles anthology album in its entirety offline...

Just spoke to Google rep "Joey" who stated unequivocally that there is NO download limit on their subscription service (which costs the exact same amount per month as Spotify), plus, I can migrate up to 50,000 non-Spotify songs to their server as well, so even if there is a shadow download limit of 20,000 songs as some have stated in this thread, I'm way ahead on Google. This REALLY grinds my gears (-family guy), and to think I'll spend every free moment the next few weeks researching my Spotify music and adding it to Google just is insanity, however since Spotify was not up front about this 3,333 x 3 = 10,000 stuff in their product literature (and it actually equals 9,999 Spotify, so where is my free ten thousandth song going to land?), I must now engage in such insanity. Shame on you for not staying competitive at worst and truthful at best Spotify... You've actively lost about 60% of the users on this thread (anecdotally), and if someone was smart about this, they'd file to get our subscription money back as we sat for "x" amount of time, paying you while waiting for music to sync in disbelief! Garbage!!!

Well good luck in finding all your music mate. I did a tedious search on how to switch over to something else than Spotify a while back. To be honest, the other services couldnt find 1 out of 3 songs. This just wraps it up for me.

And please, google music, haha, have fun navigating that on your phone mate. 98% of the time i cant even see what is playing, browsing your music is totaly insanly bad. In general the GUI of that "app" is just so back to the 80ties that its not even funny it came from the giant google.

Nevertheless i wish you luck, i was once in your shoes as well, now im a happy Spotify premium user after seeing what the allternatives are...=)

Hi @NSB, just to clarify, the 3,333 x 3 limit is only for songs saved offline. You could hypothetically store all songs in playlists and save a selection offline at a time.

@octodur

What music are you listening? I found everything at the other streaming services too. If there were some songs that are not available, the same songs were not available at the other streaming services.

The Google Play Music App works fine at Android, for me more reliable as Spotify, Rdio or Deezer. Also Google has the best integration of your own music and you can use it in a family (max. 6 persons) for 15 EUR per month. Of course, the app could be better. They should let me the choice how to display the list of artists. A normal list (not the big tiles) would be better.

@NSB

Try another service. You have at least 30 days of a free test period. I went away from Spotify just a while ago and will nether come back even if they would dispose the limit.

I tried Deezer for a few weeks. They have as wide a catalogue as spotify,
but I found the spotify interface faster, more reliable and more intuitive.
Im going to stick with spotify for the moment. But the limit is very
annoying as you only need to listen offline on one device.

the best alternative is probably apple music, which is getting better day after day. While spotify looks always the same, with the same annoying 3'333 songs limit.

I have a 128GB ipad in my car and can't get the benefit of the whole storage space because of spotify

So you can see, I am VERY diverse in my taste and i want to have the availability to listen to what ever i want at what time. I am couriuos though if you will find any of these tracks on another service. Last time i tried to switch was more than 1,5 years ago. Im sure 10-30% will be available but most of them wont.

The app for google, sure works fine, pretty ok fast, but the GUI is just horrid mate. I used to work with Graphics art and sometimes made gui's myself and the interface for google music...i have no words. I gave it a month to try to get used to it but just got anyoyed i cant see wtd is playing atm, not with full name at least. And a lot lot more that made me not erase Spotify 😃

Hey all,

So I'm now in the trial phase of Google Play Music and have to say that
while my tastes are not as diverse as some out there (@rillie2- what a
list!), I have found about 90% (+/-) of what I was listening to on Spotify
on the new platform.. An eclectic mix of music spanning centuries, styles
and continents. Most of the responses I've read are hating on the GUI, and
I must admit, it's taking some getting used to, but I do wonder how much of
it is just my instinctual, "Spotify-ied" outlook on music services, vs. how
much actually relates to a poor design.

I will say that unless I'm doing something horribly wrong (and would be
embarrassed if so given my tech background), that Google Play Music makes
it harder to download individual tracks, pushing you to eat the whole album
download, as opposed to simply grabbing a single cut like on Spotify, but
in the process of rebuilding my offline library, by downloading whole
albums as opposed to single tracks, by the time I was at the letter "F" or
"G" in my collection, I had already surpassed the 3,333 nonsense # Spotify
had limited me to.

I've heard good things about Apple Music to respond to one or two posts in
this thread, but as I'm a solid Android/PC guy, Apple Music simply won't
cut it for me.

To conclude, I will say that I've already switched out a smaller microSD
card I was using previously with Spotify, for a larger capacity one while
downloading my library in Google Music, as it seems whether due to audio
quality or bloat, that the albums I downloaded at high or extreme quality
on Spotify, now require much more room using Google's services (thankfully
I have many a memory solution on hand at any point in time). That is
something to certainly consider if you're stuck with a closed system iPhone
that has a set amount of memory- that said, if you're an Apple person, I'd
wager you'd be trying their service before Google's anyways.

The real complaint I have is that I've now replaced the essential aspects
of my offline Spotify library, however the download time on the 5G wireless
router band, connected to a 100/100MBs fiber-based internet service to
replace those tracks has been abysmal... I have a U3 rated, 90MB/s write
speed, microSD card in my phone, however downloading this music has been an
ordeal to say the least... The download process is VERY slow, and as I have
a fast write memory location, with blazing internet speeds, I must conclude
that this shortcoming falls on Google.

I will be giving this new interface a fair shake before destroying it in
these forums, as having gotten used to Spotify, it may be I might just need
to get used to Google, however at this point I agree with most of you that
Spotify's UI wins right now. My free 30 days has just started, and at over
4,500 offline songs and still counting, my initial feeling is that despite
some drawbacks, I'm finally limitless in my offline music... Something to
relish when you only listen offline on one device (like many normal
humans), but I will keep everyone updated.

I still leave everyone with one nagging question: If we're entitled by
Spotify to 3,333 songs over 3 devices, that adds to 9,999 songs, SO...
Where does that magical #10,000th song end up going?! 🙂

Happy listening all!
-NSB

Good to read your update. Keep us posted.

Jpinto- I have several friends on Apple, and to my consternation, my wife is a steadfast fan. She also has both a high capacity iPad and iPhone, and has been enjoying Apple Music since its inception... While I cannot testify to the particulars of the system, I do know she remains quite happy with her long-standing subscription- especially the cross platform accessibility between her mobile devices and Mac computer. Can't speak to download limits or anything else of consequence except that she's happy, so I hope you'd be to. I hate bashing Spotify after such a love affair with them, but given the many other apps/services that seem to be able to negotiate licences which allow for happy end users in terms of offline listeners, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a good alternate until remedied... One would think with such a revolt on their hands, Spotify would renegotiate their contracts, as I'd happily pay a few more bucks per month for unlimited, or nearly unlimited downloads- a sentiment I'd bet many on here would echo!

@richbigman- will certainly keep the updates coming over this trial period... Should you (or anyone else for that matter) find an Android-friendly service you feel is superior to both Google Play Music and Spotify, pls do speak up!

Really? The other services cost the same and have no limit. Why should I pay more? I doubt that Spotify will change anything. This topic is already 4 years old and nothing happened.

Well, now everything is different. 4 years ago there were no good alternatives to spotify.

Right now there are a lot of alternatives and Apple Music is a strong competitor, so as soon as spotify will start loosing customers they will need to do something to get them back...but maybe will be too late.

I'm think that the "contracts" thing is just BS, this 3'333 limit is not something related with the contracts in my opinion, because it just would not make sense. Why the hell should the record labels impose a 10k total offline songs limit that must be splitted in 3 devices?

I think record lables may have imposed a limit of 10k per person, then spotify decided to split it in 3 devices, because it was unable to handle it in a different way.

So I think this 3.3k limit has nothing to do with contracts, but is something that spotify could just change, but they consider it a minor problem and are using their resources for doing other things, like the recently added playlist with the "new releases of the week", that always suggest ugly music, that's just a terrible feature.

I think Spotify is focusing on what they think is most important, instead of just listening to their users.

Spotify Staff: if you're reading, trust me, I don't need any new feature, all the new features you added recently are just BS that I don't use, spotify is perfect as is, the only thing that's wrong with spotify is the 3.3k offline songs limit. Just fix that.

Just for fun I randomly tried to find 5 of you songs on Deezer. All 5 showed up...might be worth a try. I've had Spotify, Rdio, Apple Music, Google Play and Deezer. None of these services are perfect but I am the most pleased with Deezer and have had it for about a year now.

After some searching, looks like Deezer has not offline limit, better quality than spotify and a bigger catalogue... I'll try it right now.

It is even supported on my Onkyio receiver (like spotify).

wow... just tried Deezer, this is what I found out

PROS:

1 - There's away to import playlists from spotify to deezer with this: http://spotizr.com/ tried and works

2 - Deezer app on windows 10 is MUCH faster and better integrated with the system

3 - Sound quality seems better to me, I find the sound on deezer more clear with better defined highs

CONS:

1  - I tried to import only a playlist with 6 songs and 1 of them was missing! This is not a nice start

2 - There are no RAMMSTEIN on Deezer! WTF!!

From my first impressions, Deezer looks better in terms of quality and software, but looks like the catalogue is not as good as spotify

EDIT 08.04.2016 15:11:

After playing around with deezer a little more, I see many basic functions are missing, like "shuffle all music", or the ability to select multiple albums and add them to a playlist.

I think right now spotify offers an overall better experience, since the software has more features, but in the near future Deezer may be better, since it has better quality sound, no offline limits and a faster, better integrated software.

Ill have a look at it 😃 How does it help you find new music is my next question? Like artist radio, similar artists, playlists/radio based on what i've listened on so far? Most probably 40-50% of my new music is discovered this way through Spotify 😃

did a playlist transfer with http://sync.spotizr.com/ crashed in the middle somewhere, but yeah, its not find all the music i have in my lists, so to be frank, its not a option for me.

Hey there...I've found  that when using the migration services out there, they often leave songs out that are actually available.  I've noticed this when switching between Rdio, Spotify and Deezer. It's annoying but if you manually search tracks that didn't come over you can often find them. It's the price you pay to switch unfortunately and I think it just a function of slightly different track tagging from service to service. On average when I move a playlist of 100 songs there will be at least 15 missing whether I'm migrating to or from either Spotify, Deezer or the now buried Rdio.

I would play around with it for a bit and see if you like the way it works...also try to randomly search some of the missing tracks that didn't migrate. I don't look at the music it suggests for me so I can't comment on that. When I play my "flow" though it always comes up with great suggestions based on my collection.
