Revert back to Spotify 0.8.5 on Mac

Solved!

Revert back to Spotify 0.8.5 on Mac

UPDATE 3/14/15: This solution works for reverting to ANY previous version of Spotify. Just replace the application with the desired version, 0.8.5 or otherwise. I have successfully used this trick to revert to 0.9.15.27 and 0.8.5.133. Also, APPS continue to work in these previous version. Attached is a screenshot of 0.8.5.133 artist pages, clean, simple, cohesive, text a bit small, and SEARCH function still in tact. 0.8.5.133 also runs MUCH faster on my Windows and Mac machines.

The "Horrible update [0.8.8]" thread has begun to bury the work arounds for those of us NOT happy with the 0.8.8 update. Here is a guide to reverting to 0.8.5 for Mac. Spotify support has NOT provided a way for us to do this, despite my many attempts.  Hopefully it will help some people who visit the forum.

If you already have upgraded to 0.8.8: (if you haven't upgraded already, start with step #3)

  1. Find and download a copy of 0.8.5 here
  2. Mount the image and replace the application in your Applications folder with the downloaded one
  3. Now to make sure Spotify doesn't auto-update:
  4. Go to your ~/Library folder - you can do this in Finder by doing shift+cmd+g and typing "~/Library" without the quotes and hitting enter
  5. Go to Application Support/Spotify
  6. Delete Spotify_new.archive and Spotify_new.archive.sig (if they are there)
  7. Now open your favorite text editor, I used TextWrangler
  8. Make two blank documents and save them as "Spotify_new.archive" and "Spotify_new.archive.sig" - without the quotes, the same file names as the ones you deleted
  9. Right click each file and go to "Get Info"
  10. Check the "Locked" button on each and close the info window
  11. You should now see a small lock icon on each file
  12. Restart Spotify and enjoy 0.8.5 without auto updates to 0.8.8

Let me know if you have any problems! This has worked for me on OS X 10.8.2. Thanks to th80 for the help on this!

Just a quick tip for you who are using 0.8.5. Press ctrl/cmd+g in a playlist and behold the wonder of the album view!

My most missed feature in the new, botched updates 😞

Not sure why either but the method of the original post only works for a handful of times. After awhile, Spotify auto updates. So what user danho added works for me after opening about 20 times.

THIS! The oroginal method doesn't stick for me. This seems to do the trick. Thanks!

You're welcome! The original method works a treat though, took me a bit of time to fully understand how to get it working but it's still working great for me.

UPDATE 2015/JUNE/10

  1. Go to your ~/Library folder - you can do this in Finder by doing shift+cmd+g and typing "~/Library" without the quotes and hitting enter
  2. Go to "Application Support"
  3. Remove folder "Spotify"
  4. Open Spotify again 🙂

You lose your synced songs and need to log in again, but it goes back alive and is super duper easy to do.

THIS IS ME, ANGRY, GETTING IT OUT OF MY CHEST, SHOUTING OUT TO THE WIND:
I would be really really glad if they added some logic on the Spotify startup script that captures an event for this situation and removes the specific files on it's own. Also, it could ask for the user's approaval to minimize the risk of getting into an infinite loop.
Spotify, Y U DO THIS TO US? Heart Smiley Sad

That is not a solution thejamespinto. It simply removes your local settings on your machine. It does not revert to a previous version or prevent Spotify from auto-updating.

Stop spamming the thread with worthless and misleading comments.

Resurrected in 2016!

Attention Spotify power users aka those  most devoted to giving money to a company who has given them the least, if any attention. But what do you expect, we're not legion, the noob and light user reigns supreme and a company that is not interested in long term profits is smart to just treat power users as if they do not exist. Ok, three year overdue rant completed....

Spotify has killed our workaround.

Old versions on desktop no longer update with the current mobile or tablet versions. In other words, make a playlist or "star" an album in 0.8, it will not reflect on the latest iOS app. Create a playlist or add an album to a playlist on the latest iOS app, it will never show on the old desktop version.

Basically, those who use old desktop versions are confined specifically to their desktops wheras previously, any actions or changes on an old desktop version would still reflect on a newer mobile version.

I can confirm this on both Mac and Windows as I have been running 0.8.5 on both operating systems for a few years and never had any updating/sync issues until about a month ago.

It seems, now that we are truly and finally, completely **bleep**ed.

What say you?

have you tried 0.9.15?  Other than 0.8.5, this is the version most power users have stuck with as it's the most functional one before they started removing all the features.  This one has the newer, black interface, but 0.8.5 is just too old now. I remember it being too buggy to be worth using even a year ago.

I can't remember where I posted my alternative solution but it's still working a treat for me .. I'm on 9.14.13 and still got all my apps .. Any Decent Music is one of my favourite ways of checking all the new albums etc and it still works perfectly. Startup is a bit on the slow side but still quicker than before when it would auto update every single time I opened it.

I went to google music about 2 years ago and have loved it. Just stop using Spotify. There's way better options out there if you're paying for premium. There's even tools to migrate your Spotify playlists to google music. Honestly, just leave Spotify. They clearly don't care about their users and just want your money.

Does anyone have a link to the old Spotify apps? I never had a chance to try out most of them before, but since i'm on 0.9.15 they should still work.

But this version does not have album art in list view correct? That was the deal breaker for me. Although, now that I've been forced to use the newest version, also discovering there is no way to search local files has utterly dumbfounded me. Does 9.15 have that feature? That would be at least worth downgrading again for.

The old apps within the desktop client were all listed in the App Finder, located in the left sidebar. You can try if they still work with your desktop version, but many of them have been disabled by the app providers in the meantime like Lazify which is still available as an iOS and Android app.

Ok, yes i forgot to mention that i already tried loading the App Finder and all i get are the 2 spinning pinwheels, hanging there indefinitely. No apps will display.  Other users have confirmed that the apps they already had still worked though. There are some i'd really like to install, especially Lazify.  This one no longer loads in older versions of Spotify?

Correct.  v0.9.15 no longer loads artwork in list view next to each track.  It does load it at the bottom of the left sidebar for the currently playing track though, and is expandable.

It looks like you put those files in the Root Library.

You need to put them in Users/*your user*/Library/Application Support/Spotify.
