[Bug][GNOME] Missing tray icon

Spotify Linux preview Version: 0.9.10.17.g4129e1c9

OS + version: Ubuntu 14.04
CPU architecture: AMD 64-bit
Window manager: Gnome

Behavior in Linux:
When I open the open the spotify client in Linux, begin playing a song, and attempt to close it to a tray icon, no tray icon appears despite the music continuing to play, forcing me to click the desktop shortcut to reopen spotify to control it.

 

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open Chrome on a fresh install of Ubuntu using Gnome desktop
2. Open the hangouts app
3. play music
4. attempt to close the spotify window while playing music

 

What is the expected result?
The spotify icon should appear in the tray icon area

 

What happens instead?
The tray icon is non-existent

You are aware that GNOME 3 puts tray icons in a hidden place? It works fine on my Ubuntu GNOME installation.

You may want to install one of the many tray extensions for GNOME shell, like this:

Hmm, that's interesting. That looks like it solves it for GNOME. thanks!

You should also find tray icons without any extension, by pressing Windows button + M, or by moving the mouse cursor against the bottom of the screen (keep on moving it down for a while), and the notifications view will appear. There you should find tray icons like Dropbox and Spotify to the right.
