High disk activity freezes computer

I'm running Spotify 1.0.80.480.g51b03ac3 on a HP EliteBook 2560P laptop with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64 bits. When running Spotify my laptop frequently hangs with high disk activity. SPotify keeps playing the current track, but I cannot start a new track until the disk activity ends. Starting another process is virtually impossible while Spotify is using high disk I/O as well.

IOTOP shows a thread "spotify [-eyValueST]" responsible for heavy disk activity. What is this thread for and why does it clog up my laptop?

Hey @wokkiedokkie, welcome to the Community!

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with this. We don't officially support Spotify on Linux, but we'll do our best to help you out with this.

Does the issue persist if you remove Spotify and do a clean install of the app on your device?

Let us know how it goes.
