How does one move local files to a new location?

I run Spotify on the linux platform, and it works just fine - for a while, I was able to play my local files, then that capability suddenly went away; the files are still in the list, but not playable.  I followed both sets of instructions, and it didn't help.  Yes, all of my files are legal mp3s.
