Linux Mint - can't transfer local files to phone

Hi,

I am running a dual boot laptop with Mint 18.1 XFCE and Windows 10.  My phone is an iphone and I am a Spotify Premium subscriber.  On Windows I can transfer local files to my phone and play them through Spotify no problem.  When I try to do the same thing from Mint my phone is stuck on "Downloading...Waiting to download."  I know the phone can communicate because I can play non-local files through the phone using the Linux client as a remote.  Local files play fine through the Linux client itself, so I don't have the issue that most people seem to report.  Any ideas?  I change around local files frequently and I hate to keep having to boot over to Windows to make this work.  I will probaby cross-post this on the Mint forum as well.

Any thoughts on this?  I suppose I'd consider switching to Google Play.  Same price and they seem to be able to handle this easily, and from what I can tell all the music I care about is available there as well.
