Spotify client stuck at end of an ad

I use the spotify client on linux mint 18, and I recently transitioned from premium to basic subscription (2 days ago).  Everything worked fine before.

I start the client and listen to several songs, then an ad comes.  The green progress bar is a tenth of a second from the end of the ad when it stops, and I can listen to no more music. 

If I close and re-open the client, it tries and fails to run the ad, so no music.

If I reboot the computer and open the client, I can play 20-30 seconds of music before an ad tries to play but fails.

I'm missing something - any suggestions?

Do we know how long it has been known?

The most recent issue is about a week or two old.

By just looking at other people complain about this in the last week and there is already a thread started about the same issue before that I linked to. You are very likely all affected by the same bug.
