My Question or Issue
I have a paid family premium plan and the Linux app has been working for years, it stopped working today, I have no issues with payment
The error says: "The app is restricted to Premium users only. (Error code: 409)
I tried to contact support but there seems to be none, therefore I created this community post. I will cancel my account if you don't fix this issue soon, I see no point of paying for a service that does not work on Linux Desktop
I have the same issue since yesterday, I get "The app is restricted to Premium users only. (Error code: accesspoint:22)".
I have pretty much the same problem as the original poster.
I'm also using the Linux App and the error says "The app is restricted to Premium users only. (Error code: 409)" every time I try to log in - so I'm stuck on the log in page.
The app has worked well for me on Linux for many years and this problem only started today 17 May 2023, but I didn't try to use the app yesterday. It was definitely working fine over the weekend.
Spotify - Please fix this ASAP. Thanks.
Same problem here, spotify desktop app for ubuntu just stopped working, tried to log in with my premium profile, and it says "This app is restricted for premium users only. Error code: accesspoint:22"
Please fix it ASAP, Thanks.
Pretty much the same problem here. Ubuntu Spotify desktop app was working fine, until just now. This error message appears when I try logging in with my premium profile: "This app is restricted for premium users only. Error code: accesspoint:22"
im on Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia and Spotify has been working for me near perfectly up until last night. the version on my Software Manager download is version 1.1.10.546 so i guess i'm way behind. i don't want to have to whip out Mobile in order to play my music. it's unfair that suddenly now Spotify decides these old clients are obsolete and bars us entirely. i'm a computer stooge and it's a miracle the app even ran in the first place. this sucks.
Yep, same bug here. I'm on Windows 10.
Been without spotify all day, this is really painful. Why?
Same issue on Spotify on Linux, error:
"The app is restricted to Premium users only. (Error code: 409)
I am a premium user.
Same error on Lubuntu. I read somewhere that Spotify stopped supporting versions released before 2021, so I guess currently there are no working Spotify versions for Linux and there are no official support for Linux so it may take forever before they fix this.
Same problem here in France....error code 409....I did reinstall Spotify but no result.
Same here. Been a Premium Family user since nearly the beginning.
I'm not sure this even counts as irony, it's too many levels deep.
I'm having the same issue on Linux. Works fine on Windows, Android, and PS5. Have had Premium for years.
Same on Ubuntu Mate, i386, but also Windows XP.
The app is restricted to Premium users only. (Error code: 409)
sigh, still broken...
As per: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Desktop-Mac/Can-t-sign-in-to-Spotify-Error-Code-22-Version-1-0-89-3...
The old app is deprecated. On Arch I have switched to spotify-launcher (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Spotify), it's probably available on other distros as well. It's the new UI though…
It would have been nice to have an error message a bit more explicit, but it's quite easy to fix anyway 🙂
Deprecated is fine. Actively disabled, not so much. If the new UI is anything like the crippled web-player it's a no go IMO.
Also, is there a list of these "danger" messages? Do they all mean the same?
This thread was about "Error code: 409" (sounds pretty web-ish if you ask me).
Seen so far:
Any more?
Hey there!
Yes, Spotify has disabled login access for all desktop clients that are version 1.1.58 and older.
I had 1.1.10 installed for a long time (co-installed deb along with the newest version in snap) and was locked out of that on May 17th as well. I was aware there may be security problems, so I took my chances. Pretty surprised that the old version remained functional as long as it, did, since the very old app (0.9.something) I had on my unsupported Windows Phone quickly became very useless.
Spotify desktop app is basically a special "internet browser" that communicates with Spotify's servers, so I'm not surprised to see error code 408 and other web-like errors : )
As much as I liked the old look and certain features, technology keeps developing.

I'm all for the technology, but the new design choices are cr-p from a usability perspective, at least on desktop. Also it's evil to actively disable something. If it's required for some new feature set, fine, but just killing it because you don't agree with your user base is bad.
There could of course be a super feature which requires this but Spotify has completely failed in communicating that reason if so. Spotify can't even provide a simple changelog. Very lame!
