Track notifications not working?

Track notifications not working?

I'm using spotify-client package version 1:1.0.49.125.g72ee7853-111

I do not see any notifications pop up on my Ubuntu 16.04 desktop with Unity DE

From Display Options in Settings, I have the following enabled:

Show unavailable songs in playlists
Show desktop notifications when the songs changes

Contents of prefs file:

ui.hide_hpto=true
ui.show_friend_feed=false
ui.show_unplayable_tracks=true
audio.normalize_v2=false
audio.sync_bitrate_enumeration=4
audio.play_bitrate_enumeration=4

I've tried running with flag --show-console but nothing in the output matches "notif". How can I debug what's going on? Can anybody reproduce this behavior?

Edit: If I purge the package and remove ./config/spotify, then when I start Spotify again and login I'm able to see notifications. The Display Options are different, however. Maybe this is the issue? Also, if I have a fullscreen application open, the notifications no longer pop up. Why are the libnotify messages not Critical urgency, so that they show up while I'm gaming?
