At least 4 major bugs making the web player unusable in safari on mac

At least 4 major bugs making the web player unusable in safari on mac

Safari 14 and 15; MacOS 11.6

Troubleshooting steps taken: Safari extensions turned off; computer restarted; tried private browsing mode

1: When playing a playlist sometimes the web player will skip every other song. Bug is inconsistent.

2: Media keyboard keys rarely control the web player. Bug is also inconsistent.

3: When playing a playlist the web player will often stop playback after 2, 3, or 4 songs. Also inconsistent.

4: In the web player the play, next song, and previous song keys only work about half the time I click them. Reloading the web page fixes it for a short amount of time. Also inconsistent.

Honestly, what is going on? It's nearly unusable.

Hey there @night81,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. We moved your post from Idea submissions since it doesn't qualify as an idea.

Just to confirm, have you tried using a different browser?

We'd also recommend clearing the cache and cookies on your browser and making sure it's up to date.

Keep us posted on how it goes!

Spotify 's web player has been basically unusable in Safari Version 15.0 (16612.1.29.41.4, 16612).  Frequently, images don't render unless I click a second time in the frame.  When I start a playlist, it takes multiple clicks on the play button for the music to start.  When a song ends, the music stops--it doesn't auto-advance to the next song.  Clicking the play button beside the next song frequently restarts the previous song.  Multiple random clicks are necessary to force the player to advance.  Emptying the cache (Develop -> Empty Caches) followed by shift-reload do not resolve this issue.  Finally, to add insult to injury, my replies to this thread have failed with "An Unexpected Error".

Hi @jtanner,

Thank you for posting on this thread!

It's odd that Safari is having all these issues with our platforms, but there are other things we can try here.

Please head to this article to find the steps to clear the Hosts file on your computer. After doing it, check if it makes a difference on the Web Player.

If the issue persists, could you try accessing it with a different browser? This way we can isolate the issue better.

These steps can apply as well to the issue posting on the Community.

Let us know how it goes.

I have completely the same situation as jtanner. I am not going to use another browser just because of Spotify. Send another steps how to solve it.

Hi @viktoriatom,

When will this issue be solved? It's already been two weeks.

I have exactly the same problem!

Safari on Monterey 12.6

It stops playing, then some time later, it continues somewhere.

It sometimes skips songs, sometimes it seems to play them but no sound can be heard.

And more strange things - right now, it continued somewhere on my Billy Joel playlist - for some seconds and then, all silcence again.

I will try to select the albums instead ... but it's unbelievable that this is not working

And STOP recommending other webbrowsers, really!

I tried to play an album instead - this also does not work.

It's more than strange.

And totally not understandable from a big company like Spotify.

It may be time to change to a different service.

Hey @spot666,

Thanks for your replies and for the info shared.

In this case, we'd like to gather some additional info. Is this happening if you change the internet connection you're using? Is this happening over WiFi? Ethernet? Both? If possible, you can create a hotspot from your phone and connect your computer to it, to see if you notice any difference. Give it a try and let us know if changing the connection makes any difference.

On another note and just to confirm, do you use a VPN? If yes, try switching it off.

Lastly, just to confirm, has the app always been behaving like this or does it start to happen after a specific event such as an OS update? Please send us the details about it.

Keep us in the loop!

Hello,

thanks for your reply.

No, luckily the webplay does not always behave like this!

And no, it has nothing to do with my internet connection - which is very stable and very fast and I constantly work remotely over ssh so that any problem would instantly get noticed.

Also, I stream lots of other things - music, video - and NONE of the other providers has similar problems!

It is ONLY the Spotify WebPlayer in Safari.

Hey @spot666

Thanks for getting back to us.

Would you mind checking if the version of your browser has any pending updates?

Also, does the same happen while using the desktop app?

On another note, we'd like to know if this happens across devices or only on your PC.

Keep us posted.

“Music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens.”– Maria von Trapp

This happens since years, regardless of the version of macOS.

To be honest, since 2 days I experienced no problems with the WebPlayer ...

I do not use the Desktop App.

And will not, as I use Safari all of the day on macOS and don't want to have another App running while doing so - also, an App gives the developer way more control over my Mac, while it is better controlled when just running a website instead of a separate App.

Contrarily, I do not use the webbrowser on iOS or iPadOS ... as I mostly have music running from the App while using other Apps and don't want a browser to run in the background.

Hey @spot666,

Thanks for your reply.

We've forwarded this info to the relevant team, however we can't confirm when it will be addressed. In the meantime, please make sure to keep your browser up-to-date.

Let us know if there's anything else.

Hey there, I'm using the Web Player from Safari 16.3 on MacOS Monterey 12.6.3 and I'm randomly having issues playing music.

Sometimes it plays one song, sometimes a bunch, but eventually the control bar turns grey and stops playing everything (screenshot attached); sometimes it looks like is playing a new song but nothing is hearable.

It always happens when the next/previous song should play, either if manually triggered or at the end of a song.

There's no way to resume playing the playlist: pressing the green play button doesn't do anything; selecting a song doesn't do anything, etc.

Please note that it also happens keeping the Web Player in foreground all the time.

Most of the times closing the tab where the Web Player is running and reopening it doesn't help and I need to restart Safari entirely in order to be able to play music on your web app again.

This is becoming extremely annoying and it's happening since months already and many different versions of Safari.
