Mac CPU 100% After Latest Update

MacBook Pro 16" 2019 - Dual external monitors

macOS 12.0.1

Spotify Premium for macOS (Intel)
1.1.72.439.gc253025e

Updated to the latest version yesterday and CPU now running @ 100%

Screen Shot 2021-11-18 at 11.51.50 AM.png

Have already tried a clean install using these instructions.

Hardware acceleration is off

Crossfade is off

Show local files is off

Only noticed issue after latest update. I am in activity monitor somewhat frequently so would have noticed if Spotify was topping the list.

same here

Same for me. The weird thing is that cpu usage go to 100% without even streaming, just by being loaded in memory.

Hey everyone,

Can you try exiting the Spotify app and then opening it again? Are you still getting high CPU usage?

Things should be back to normal here soon.

Let me know if it's working better now.

Note: I'm not a Spotify employee.

It seems to be back to normal now at about 4-7% cpu usage while playing songs (don't know what it was before).

Edit: Now the two Spotify Helper processes (GPU and renderer) take up an abnormal amount of CPU processing power, around 30-50% combined.

Also having this problem for the past few days.

Clean reinstalls and all the usual steps including changing relevant settings and restarting the app don't help.

Hi folks!

Thanks for the all the info you've sent so far.

There's a newer version of Spotify for the desktop app that includes some optimizations, so make sure to update it to see if this makes the difference.

We'll be on the lookout for your replies.

Updating didn't help my cause, Eni. From the moment I launch Spotify, it ramps CPU to 100%+ and stays there.

This is beyond frustrating. Apparently even closing the lid on my Macbook Pro doesn't stop the CPU usage either -- the other day I opened my computer to find significant heat damage to the top half of my screen as a result of Spotify going crazy all night.

Hey @wellmashed,

Thanks for reaching out.

We're sorry to hear about that. To confirm, did you already try going to Settings > toggling Show Local Files on > toggling off all the sources that appear there > toggling Show Local Files back off?

Keep us posted.

@CarlosE, that worked!

"Show local files" was already set to Off when I looked at Settings. I enabled "Show local files," which exposed 3 more options (Downloads, My Music, etc), 2 of which were enabled. After disabling all of them, and then disabling "Show local files" again, my CPU usage remained high. I re-launched Spotify and now CPU usage has returned to > 0.4% CPU.

THANK YOU.

Hey @wellmashed,

We're glad to hear it worked!

My Question or Issue

I'm experiencing 50-60% of my CPU being used by the app while the computer idles. Made the computer so hot, I couldn't touch it. Activity monitor wasn't showing Spotify as an issue... So I ran top in the terminal, which revealed Spotfy as the culprit.

Just started listening on my phone, and now my computer is cool enough to touch.
