MacBook Playback Control Buttons not working

Got a new Macbook Pro a week or two ago. Installed Spotify. Imported all of my itunes library into itunes. Got the computer all set up the way i like it.

now the playback control buttons (F7, F8, F9) don't control spotify. They control itunes if its open, but i listen to spotify all the time.

Suggestions?

Well it might be just anything.

But you shouldn't have any other music player on the background just Spotify.

At least that's what happened to me. If I had another app, let's say iTunes or YouTube in Safari, I was playing music through Spotify then started to watch or listen something in either of this 2 other apps the buttons you mentioned didn't work with Spotify even if I stopped the activity there, only when I closed them.
