No music without premium? How to listen to some music?

Hi folks,
I wanted to try spotify, so I opened the website, signed in (free account obviously) and opened the webplayer (I'm on a Mac OS Catalina).

I have listened to the "Premium Ad" (in French, why?) at least ten times by now, but NO song.

I found some songs I actually wanted to listen to and - after hearing the ad how it would be great to have premium - I could listen to 9 seconds of the song. 

So I tried something from the Home Screen to no avail. The ad inviting me to buy premium (in French) plays flawlessly (but I'm not going to buy anything if I cannot even listen to ONE song in 10 ads).

There was a similar question (solved) about using the APP on MAC, but I use webplayer, so I could not use the solution (deleting Library for the app).

I searched for solution and they say to check if music works in webplayer, then they say if it works the problem is in faulty device. But they don't mention what to do if there is no music in webplayer, which makes me think that this is not a bug but a feature. Hence my question: 
Do you really need the Premium account to hear the WHOLE song?
It doesn't really hang together, does it? Or do I miss something?

Sorry about your listening experience so far! This does sound like a glitch.

The first step, which should help both your ad problem and your language problem, is doing a clean reinstallation.
