OSX 10.10.5: minor interruption of connection to bluetooth headset requires a restart of spotify

OSX 10.10.5, Spotify 1.0.25.127, bluetooth headset.

If I walk about 15 feet away from the mac while spotify is playing, Spotify stops playing. If I come back in range, Spotify doesn't resume and will not resume playing when I hit play. Error message is "Can't play the current song". 

This means that I have to leave my bluetooth headphones on my desk whenever I walk away from my desk. Doesn't that defeat the purpose?!

BTW Chrome has no issue with this. If I am playing a video in Chrome and go to the bathroom with the headset in I can still hear the video (with some predictable drops in quality and skips).

This issue was reported before (18 months ago?!) but I made a separate post because the issue of a bluetooth headset experiencing a minor interruption in connection will be incredibly common. Spotify should be able to deal with this.
