Persistent 'cannot play this song' error after resuming from a long pause

Persistent 'cannot play this song' error after resuming from a long pause

This error is occurring on a 2017 Macbook Pro 13" Retina operating OS X Catalina 10.15.1.

 

Any time I pause play on Spotify and resume after an extended period (anywhere from 5 minutes onwards), Spotify persistently gives me the 'cannot play this song' error (which appears as the blue bar on top of the application). Changing songs does not fix this, neither does changing playlists. The only solution is to restart the app.

 

Previous topics from a few years ago on these forums have asked similar questions and one proposed solution is to disable hardware acceleration in the settings; this does not fix the problem in my case. Neither does enabling or disabling crossfade.

Hi there!

I know it sounds simple, but it's often overlooked. Could you try restarting your device? If that doesn't help, try a quick clean reinstall of the app. Just follow these steps.

If you're still having trouble, could you let me know the exact version of Spotify and the exact version of the operating system you're running?

I'll see what I can suggest next!
