Play/Pause, forward and back button not working (f7, f8, and f9)

My keyboard keys for play/pause, skip forward, and skip back are no longer working with spotify. I have looked online for solutions, but none seem to work. It works for iTunes. What should I do?

When you press the function keys, do they affect a different app/window? In my experience, Mac OS must choose one "priority" application (iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, Netflix, etc.), so having multiple windows open could be interfering with Spotify.
