Previously it was gorgeous & it was possible to search by popularity.

Then we could do spotify:search:<query> to allow searches this way.

In the latest version (1.01) of Spotify how can we search by popularity?

This feature is not in the new version.
Spotify plans to bring some features back, but it is currently not known if the feature you mentioned will be coming back.
