Spotify stops when error bell sounds (Mac)

I work with spotify playing in the background.  I work using the built in terminal on Mac OSX.  Whilst working occasionally the error bell from the console will sound and this regularly stops Spotify from playing by pausing the song.

I wouldn't mind if I could go back to Spotify and click play to start the song playing again.   However when I click play the time starts incrementing as if it's playing the song but no audio comes out and Spotify reports that "Can't play current song." in a blue banner at the top of the screen.  The only option to "fix" it is to close the Spotify client entirely and reopen it 😕

This error has been happening for about a year.
