ads playing abruptly during music

This is a recent development: not only do ads sometimes kick in while the music is still playing, right now I have spotify paused and it's trying to randomly play an ad (at twice the volume, no less) while it's still PAUSED. Like, I get a split-second of ad, enough to hear a word or two, and it goes back to pause. I've been using spotify as something to listen to between meetings, and having ads play *during* the music-playing slot is bad enough. I use my computer for meetings, too, and I absolutely can NOT have it kicking it randomly mid-work meeting. That's just unacceptable. What the **bleep** is going wrong with the app?
